The only church in Deco style anywhere around Bournemouth and Poole, and how splendid an example, retaining the standard Gothic pattern of tower and nave, but produced through a Modernist filter: hence its massive tower and the dramatic soaring west window and the concrete 'arches' ober the western doors. I haven't managed to get inside yet. Nevertheless Bournemouth is rather lucky to have something like this.
This part of Bournemouth yields few Deco buildings, though Belle Vue Road itself has the unspectacular Clifton Court and Bolton Court, and the Chez Nick restaurant at 186 Seabourne Road is a very nice shop frontage in red brick and concrete which retains its jazzy signboard and fitting for a flagpole. I wonder what it used to be? |
