James Stirling's CV

Personal Details

Background

My area of research is in the application of tools from nonlinear dynamics to modelling and analysis in high performance sport. I have also worked on chaotic advection in environmental fluid flows (pollution problems etc.) and chaos in both nonlinear optics (ie. on chaotic behavior in what are known as chi(2) materials) and in breathers (ie. chaotic breathers in damped driven DNLS).

The research in exercise physiology is done in collaboration with Prof. Bengt Saltin at the Copenhagen Muscle Research Center, Prof. Veronique Billat at the University of Evry Val d??Essonne and Dr. Maria Zakynthinaki at the Departament de Matematiques, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona. The aim of the research is to model and analyze an athlete's physiological response (such as their oxygen uptake and heart rate kinetics) to varying exercise intensities. I have recently been invited to write a review article on modelling oxygen uptake kinetics for the Journal of Applied Physiology. Other interests in exercise physiology include modelling and analyzing the response to different forms of interval training, with a view to developing highly optimized and individualized training methods to improve performance. I am also interested in the effect of altitude on performance and the question of how to improve performance at altitude. With Dr. Maria Zakynthinaki I have analyzed and modelled a variety of biomechanical problems, including work on sporting technique related to balance and fatigue induced tremor in both gymnasts and martial artists. This work also uses animation tools as an aid to further understanding the biomechanical processes. Other interests in biomechanics include falling and methods used in martial arts to fall safely. In all of the above areas of research I aim to apply the findings to high performance training methodology, the testing of athletes and the improvement of sporting technique. I also have a wide practical experience in the design of experiments and the collecting, editing and interpretation of experimental data. My research has been published in major international peer reviewed journals as well as lecture notes and numerous conference proceedings. I also have experience as a reviewer for a number of major international journals and conference proceedings.

I am a UK athletics qualified coach with specialization in endurance and I currently coach (see www.need-4-speed.eu for more details) a variety of competitive athletes in Spain, Greece and Denmark. I am a personal trainer to Dr. Steffen Kjaer Johansen, who is first reserve (one of the final 4 out of 266) for the Danish position in the European Space Agency's astronaut corps. I also work as a sport science consultant (with Dr. Maria Zakynthinaki) to Longfield School, Darlington, Co. Durham, UK, which obtained Sports College status in September 2004.

I have taught at both postgraduate and undergraduate level. Areas include mathematics for engineers (including statistical methods of analysis, methods of time series analysis and modelling, techniques of experimental data treatment etc.) and numerical methods of data analysis and programming, as well as applications of mathematical modelling and analysis to problems in biomechanics, exercise physiology and fluid mechanics. A wide variety of computing, programming, experimental data analysis and modelling tools are used in my research, along with various software packages (including graphics and audio visual presentation packages). I also have a wide experience in web design.

Training and sport experience

I am very interested in high performance sport as a competitor, a coach and also a scientist. I run competitively on the track, road, cross country and in high altitude sky races in the mountains. I have competed for Loughborough University, North Eastern counties, Durham county, Darlington Harriers, Mandale Harriers, Los Feliz Flyers, Sparta, OFI and Maddogs International. The training squads which I have been a member of, with some of these clubs are amongst the best in their respective countries and contain international athletes, and top level coaches from whom I have learnt different training methodologies.

I currently hold a UK athletics level 2 coaching award with specialization in endurance (I am currently taking the level 3 award). I have coached a variety of runners at different levels for the last 4-5 years. Currently I coach Dr. Steffen Kjaer Johansen, with whom in 2006 I competed in various high altitude mountain races (including races in the Buff Sky runner World series and the Sky games). I originally worked with Steffen as a personal trainer regarding improving fitness for the medicals for a position in the European Space Agency's astronaut corps. Steffen is the first reserve (4th out of 266 applicants) for the Danish members the European Space Agency's astronaut corps.

I am also very interested in the use of training methods from dance, yoga, martial arts and somatics (such as Feldenkrais method) for general conditioning. I was a student of conditioning for dance with Ana Xena at Equilibrium (November 2004 until September 2005) and previously (2002-2003) at the Centro Pilar Dominguez, Barcelona, Spain. Regarding Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga) I was a student of Anastasios Koutsoyiannis (2004) at the Studio KER of Efi Kaloutsi, Chania, Crete, Greece. I also studied (from December 2004 to the October 2005) Ashtanga at Yoga Space in Barcelona with Diane Bell. From 03-05 June 2005 I attended an intensive workshop on Ashtanga Yoga with Kino MacGregor, at the "Yoga Space", Barcelona. I currently study Yoga (Iyengar) with Upendra Arya at the Ashtanga Veda Center, Insituto de yoga in Barcelona. As well as yoga I also currently practice Aikido at the Barcelona Aikikai with sensei's Angel Alvarez (January 2005 - March 2005) and Oriol Morales (April 2005 until present). I have attended a number of seminar on Aikido given by various sensei's including Stephane Benedetti.

Due to being self coached for a number of years and coaching a number of athletes I have read widely in the areas of high performance training methodology particularly with regards running from both a physiological and technical point of view. I have also read widely in other areas related to injury prevention, mobility, flexibility, strength training, somatics (such as Feldenkrais method), martial arts and Yoga.

Computer and programming skills

Other interests

I also rock climb (boulder), try to surf (I am learning, slowly), swim, snorkel and take part in a wide variety of other sports. Other main interests include football (Newcastle United), reading, art, music and travel.
