WHY DO KIDS JOIN GANGS? Gangs can meet needs that go unfulfilled in other parts of kids' lives. The gangs can give a sense of security, structure and discipline that is missing at home. They appear to be loyal when others are not. The lack of positive influences and interactions with parents can lead kids to gangs. Reasons why people join gangs - Identity - Fellowship - Protection - Intimidation - Perceived Excitement - Respect |

ORGANIZATION THAT IS ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM: SCORE Program The Special Community Outreach Education program from the Rhode Island Department of Correction is a community service aimed at persuading young men and women to positively alter their future. Kids go there so prisoner could tell them that it is not worth it to go jail. Lee Allison from the SCORE program visited our class to share this information. It was very interesting to hear about this program that could help keep kids out of gangs and prison. |
