WHY SCHOOL VIOLENCE IS A   PROBLEM Violence in school is an important issue because school is for kids to learn, not for them to be worried about getting hurt. Kids shouldn't have to wake up in the morning and be scared to go to school because they might get beat up. FACTS ABOUT SCHOOL VIOLENCE -The odds of a student being injured with a weapon in school are one in 15. - Over 7% of students reported having been threatened or injured with a weapon in the past 12 months. - 14% of students reported being in a physical fight at school in the past 12 months. - There is a higher percent of males carrying weapons in school than females; 11%  (male) to 3%(female). WHAT CAN BE DONE? Metal detectors and cameras should be in schools to keep everyone safe. For his solution, Russ Ebersol got more then 150 calls. He runs a lucrative Bethesda, Md. firm that takes 500 dollars from schools to bring in Labrador retrievers to sniff out bombs and gunpowder. At one school, they have armed guards: two undercover in plain clothes and a guard to look for signs of thing that could lead to an assault.  These measures could keep students at large schools safe.

Who Is Affected? School-associated violence is a major concern for most Americans. Such violence not only affects the individuals involved, but also has an enormous impact on their families, the entire school population, and the community at large. School violence includes fighting, as well as deaths. Of high school students nationwide in 1997: 15.0% were in one or more physical fights on school property. 3.5% were treated by a doctor or a nurse for injuries sustained in a fight. 4.0% had missed one or more days of school in the past month because they felt unsafe traveling to or from school. From an ongoing study of school-associated violent deaths (a school-associated death is one that occurs on school property, at a school-sponsored event, or on the way to or from a school-sponsored event): 58 school-associated deaths occurred during the 1997-98 school year. The average number of school-associated violent events with multiple victims has increased from one event per school year in 1992 to five events per year in 1998. From the CDC.
