Lesson plan by Jamie Fein

Day 8

What’s on for today:

Compare the language of John Fowles to the language of Shakespeare and compare the characters in The Collector to the play The Tempest

What to do:

1)      Read out loud pages 63-67 ,263 where Miranda describes Ferdinand as Caliban for Shakespeare’s play The Tempest

2)      Give students hand out of a scene between Prospero and Caliban and discuss the differences in the character’s language.  Discuss why Caliban is not happy with the new language he possesses, why does Prospero give Caliban a new language…

3)      Also discuss Ferdinand’s thoughts of kissing Miranda and Miranda’s response to rape

4)      Give handout of a dialog and Miranda and Ferdinand and a handout from Shakespeare set free of how to turn language Shakespearean.

5)      Students should work in pairs to turn the dialog into Shakespeare language

6)      Students will then read the dialog out loud

8)  Students will discuss the similarities between the scenes, (Miranda trying to better and educate Ferdinand, Ferdinand trying to “rape” Miranda)

Homework:

. Read pages 110-130 focus on how Ferdinand’s views of Miranda have changed
