A Day At Harper's Ferry, West Virginia

July 1999

A Little Background

HARPERS FERRY is a small residential town and tourist center. It is located in the Blue Ridge Mountians of West Virginia, where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet. It was settled in 1732, and is named for Robert Harper, who began to operate a ferry across the Potomac River in 1747.

In the late 1790's an armory and US arsenal were established here. Many of the rifles used in the War of 1812 and the American Civil War were manufactured here. In 1859 the arsenal was seized in a famous raid by the abolitionist John Brown, whose attempt to free the slaves cost many lives. During the Civil War, this strategically located town was the site of a number of engagements between Confederate and Union troops.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, encompasses 2,300 acres in the states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. It was established in 1944 as a national monument, and redesignated in 1963. Several old structures have been restored as museums, including the Information Center, Industry Museum, Restoration Museum, Wetlands Exhibit, John Brown Museum and Fort, Storer College Museum, Black Voices Museum, Civil War Museum, and the Harper House.

Between war battles and flooding, the Railroad Bridges of Harper's Ferry have not always survived. In the 19th century two wooden bridges collapsed, one iron bridge was blown up nine times during the civil war, three bridges have been destroyed by floods, and in 1942 one caught fire, but survived. This railroad bridge standing here today has managed to remain standing since 1894.
