Recurring Nightmare

In the long moon's shadow a stranger moves
silently.

Only the cat-smooth footfalls in my sleep
show where he has been.
I have run down my deep dream halls
until my legs were stiff under the blankets
but I never got away, no,
and I never saw him
I need new eyes, prisms, to unfold
the rainbow -- I need eyes like moons
Milky light spills and streaks across the view
honing the grass to silver, but the shadows
lurk under bearded trees as black as pits
holes in the mirror world, holes in my sight
a stranger moves in the garden
skulks under the trees
and makes my mirrors lie
