Craig's Childhood Memory
5/20/2003
William Shatner: Now, tell me about yourself.  What about you as a child?

Craig: Me?  Childhood memory?  You want a childhood memory?

Shatner: I do because you don't strike me as ever having been a child.  You're so big.

Craig: I have one favorite story that I've never told before.

Shatner: You've never told this story?

Craig: On TV, no no.  Uh, it's about the old man.  I'm close to my dad and my mom.  They've been married 46 years.  But I was 9 years old...(audience cheers)  I'm guessing I was 9, and I went down to the old Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store and I saw this bicycle.  You know, with the old banana seats and the sissy bar and the handles.  And the color... Listen to this color of the bike: Candy Apple Green.

Shatner: Unbelievable.

Craig: And I wanted it and my old man said "absolutely not."  You know, "No, we can't afford that."  Fast forward about 4 months.  It's my birthday.  Turning 10.  Dad says "Let's go out and walk the dog."  I have a golden retriever.  I have to walk the dog.  On the border of our lawn and the neighbor's lawn...yard, there's the bike sitting and I'm like...I go, "what's that?"  And dad goes, "Well, maybe some kid must have left it here.  The kid must be in the other house there."  I go "Yeah, it's a nice bike, dad."  And he goes, "Why don't you get on it?  The kid's not back yet."  I go, "I can't get on it!  The kid's gonna beat me up!  You know, I've been beaten up enough!  The kid's gonna beat me up!"  And he goes, "Just get on for a second.  I'll hold the dog."  So he held the dog.  And I got on the bike.  He goes, "How does it feel?"  I said, "Feels pretty good."  He goes..."Happy Birthday, son."

(audience cheers)

Craig: Where's the...We have a picture.  Look!  Look at the little candy apple green!
