Craig Kilborn is leaving CBS' "Late Late Show" after five years on the late night talk-variety show, Daily Variety said Friday.

The paper said Kilborn and CBS had been in talks all summer on a new multi-year deal, before Kilborn notified network officials he will leave the show to pursue other projects as a writer and producer.

"It was easily the greatest job I've had, and CBS was very generous in their offer to re-sign me," Kilborn said.  "But I simply want to try something new.  I can now focus on writing and producing different television projects I haven't had time for."

Variety said Kilborn will probably leave the show by the end of August or early September.  Worldwide Pants--David Letterman's production company, which produces the "Late Late Show"--is likely to begin the search for a replacement for Kilborn immediately.

Speculation has already begun that CBS might pursue NBC late night host Conan O'Brien, who is under contract at NBC though December 2005.
