When ABC's Jimmy Kimmel entered the late night ratings fray, we matched him against the obvious: NBC's Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien, CBS's David Letterman and Craig Kilborn. Of these veterans, Kilborn tended to be the unsung after-midnight host--until CBS made us aware that he was steadily beating Kimmel for second spot in the Nielsens.
Will "Jimmy Kimmel" find its stride? Eventually. In the meanwhile, we've been pondering other kinds of match-ups for former Comedy Central personalities Kilborn and Kimmel. Since we found the host of "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn" at the bar of Hollywood's Lucky Strikes during a CBS party, we decided to get his input.
Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Kilborn in a wrestling match. Who would be victorious? Well, I'm not a violent person.
Jimmy's kind of squat. And you're a tall guy. Yeah, but I guess if I had to, I would probably pin him. But if I grabbed another guy and felt doughiness, I might recoil. So I don't know.
You have the height advantage, but he could make with the sweep. I am cat quick! But hopefully we'll never get to that. I don't like wrestling. I took it once in eight grade, and I didn't enjoy it. I get claustrophobic.
Right now, you're winning the ratings, but he's kind of gaining on you. Actually, he's not--(ABC) spins it well. He was supposed to be competitive with Leno and Letterman. I think they're grasping for something. But he's a good kid. Give him time.
What do you think his show needs? The producers, they've got to come strong with the comedy. The interviewing takes a few years, but he'll be all right. Apparently there's room for everyone in late night, you know?
How long did it take you to find your stride? Five minutes.
Ok, Mr. Humble, one last wrestling question. Would it change the playing field if Jello were thrown into the mix? Well, I don't like Jello but Jimmy, I bet you he's a Jello kind of guy, and he'd eat it and get groggy. Slow down. Again, advantage: Kilby.
