As if following David Letterman every night as host of the Late Late Show weren't enough work, Craig Kilborn will moolight as emcee of the third annual TV Guide Awards tonight. Is the late-night mainstay quite ready for a prime-time hosting gig? "I did something in high school, a basketball banquet where I was all-state and I dribbled the ball and stuff," he jokes to TV Guide Online. "But this is the first big one."
Humility takes a backseat, however, once Kilborn switches into his signature schtick. "I did it because I wanted to help get the TV Guide Awards on the map," he smirks. "You know, the Oscars, the Emmy's-they don't need my help. They're fine without me. [TV Guide] said 'Kilby, can you come in and do this?' So I said, 'Sure.'"
While he occasionally enjoys a change of venue, Kilborn says he's devoted to his own show, which celebrates its two year anniversary during the week of April 9-13. "But we're calling it our seven-year anniversary because we don't count very well," he chuckles. "That's a big deal. We may take the show on the road to Vegas or 'San Petrolina,' which is a little celebrity enclave north of Los Angeles that I made up. We've done that on the show before."
As he continues his tour of duty in the late-night wars, we just have to ask...does anyone still confuse Kilborn with the other tall, redhaired, talking head: his timeslot competitor, Conan O'Brian?
"No, we look different enough," he insists, then mock-nervously rattles off a litany of their differences: Only one of us can dunk [a basketball]. And we have a cooler set because it's got the leather chairs and the hardwood floors. It's got a better vibe, don't you think? I don't know what I'm talking about. We love Conan; he's good people. I've had dinner with him..." |
