'SportsCenter' Old-School Week Begins Sunday

Some you'll remember.  Some you won't.  Some you'll recognize but won't remember they were ever on "SportsCenter."

Beginning Sunday, ESPN will bring back five former "SportsCenter" anchor to join current anchors for the 11 p.m. show.  First up is Craig Kilborn (1993-96) with Dan Patrick.  On Monday, Charley Steiner (1988-2002) with longtime partner, Bob Ley; followed by Gayle Gardner (1983-87) with Stuart Scott (Tuesday); Greg Gumbel (1981-86) with Chris Berman (Wednesday) and George Grande (1979-88) with Berman (Thursday).

Some interesting highlights:

--Grande anchored the first "SportsCenter" on Sept. 7, 1979.

--Gumbel (CBS) and Berman are both hosts of NFL pregame shows.

--Gardner, the first woman to anchor "SportsCenter," returns to television after a series of medical problems.

Mark Shapiro, ESPN executive vice president, programming and production, said a great deal of thought went into deciding which "old school" anchor would be paired with the current one.  But a natural pairing would have been Gardner with current anchor Linda Cohn.

"We talked to the ones that were there and the ones that are there now and came up with these pairings," Shapiro said.  "We feel we have a good combination."

Absent is Keith Olbermann, now an anchor with MSNBC.  Shapiro said Olbermann's past relationship with ESPN made it impossible to have him back in the Bristol, Conn., studios.
