Go ahead.  Dive into it.  It will be the best experience of your lifetime.
During the grades of K-6 I experienced more rewards in my life than I could ever imagine.  Just imagine the look on your childs face when he or she reads for the first time, or learns anything else for the first time.  It will be an experience you will never forget.  And, they will always remember who taught them.  The best advise I can give for these years is lots of patience and lots and lots of praise to the child for each accomplishment. You and I both know that we will try harder if we are praised.  It makes us want to do our best.  Just remember that each person is better at different things than others.  You will be astonished to find that they are much better than you ever were in some subjects.  Then again, they may not like the same subjects that were your favorites.
It is my experience that during the time of grade school, my children were eager to absorb just about anything you put into their tiny little heads.  A word of caution, please be sure it is what you want to put into their little heads.  A few times, I caught myself stopping midstream in the middle of a sentence from a teachers manual to find that I did not want my child to absorb that thought.  God gave you a good mind, so use it.  What you implant at this time will always be remembered by them, even when they seem to disagree later.  I have found that as the teen years go by, my daughter has a mind of her own sometimes.  But then again, she will turn around and think back on what she has been taught. One of the funniest things I heard her say to a friend a while back was--"Don't you just hate it when you find out your mom was right?"  Another thing that has been a trait of my children is the fact that they naturally want to please their parents.  My husband and I still tend to want to please our parents for some reason or another.
