Homeschool Beginnings

To start off with, let me tell you a little about myself.  In high school, I alway thought I would be a Geometry teacher.  Well, I got married, got a better paying job, and had two children.  For twelve years, I struggled with being the best mom I could be and working.  It was just not for me.  Well, I wound up in a divorce, and was devistated.  Then my life turned around.

Next, I remarried, and we had our little blessing, Laci.  I quit my job, because I wanted to be with her every moment of the day.  I was never happier.  From the first time I heard about homeschool, I knew it was for me.  I thought about it constantly.  The rewards were endless in my mind. The decission came purely from the heart.  I knew this was the plan God held for me.

I decided to start homeschooling Laci when she was four years old.  I decided this, so that I would have a year to see how it would go. I ordered a year's curriculum and proceeded.  I told her I was going to teach her to read.  She looked up at me and said, "I don't need to read, because you read to me every day." Then we began our journey.  It was wonderful! She could read just about every book the first grade had to offer within two months.  The time we had together was a truely enriching experience. I thoroughly enjoyed watching her little mind grow.  She loved reading everything in sight.  Everyone would tell me how smart she was.  Then they would look at me with shock when they found out she was homeschooled.

The main thing I have to say about it is have patience and do it out of love.  Then, you won't go wrong.  Realize that some children take more time than others.  My oldest daughter is a nurse.  I taught her to read before she went to public school.  When my son came along, I didn't have that much time.  He had a harder time learning to read, but it all came together in time.  He is now an accountant for a software company.  Don't be afraid to try different things, as each child learns differently.  Find out what works best for you.  Above all, don't get discouraged, with God's help it will all piece together.  This is about love and faith.
