PET OVERPOPULATION AND BREEDING FACTS

SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS

Put shelters and rescues out of business. Think of it this way. Your pet dog has a litter of eight puppies. You find homes for them all. Now eight dogs will be euthanized at your local shelter, because there are eight fewer homes to place them in. Or you buy a puppy from a pet store. There's another home gone and another homeless pet euthanized.

There are very few legitimate reasons to breed. Five thousand pets are killed each DAY in this country.

ADULT DOG VERSUS PUPPY Most of us live such a busy life that raising and training a puppy is almost impossible. Many dogs turned into shelters are already housetrained, and some even have obedience training. Dogs over one or two years old are past the "chewing everything in sight" stage.

Another thing to consider is the size of dog you are looking for. There is no way to be sure how big a shelter puppy will grow. Many adult dogs are turned into shelters because the owners "didn't realize he would get so BIG!" With an adult dog you know exactly what you are getting, no surprises.

Most shelter staff will be able to help you choose an adult dog that will fit into your lifestyle. No kill shelters and rescues, and other shelters who keep pets for an extended period of time, are familiar with the dogs unique personality traits and level of training.

Ways You Can Help End Pet Overpopulation

1. Have your pets spayed or neutered to cut down on the abundance of unwanted puppies and kittens.

2. Volunteer your time at a local shelter.

3. Provide a foster home for an abandoned pet.

4. Adopt a pet and give it a good home INDOORS with you and your family. Dogs are pack animals and become very unhappy if left alone outdoors, especially on chains. The United States Department of Agriculture has stated that tethering (chaining) is cruelty to animals.

BYE BABY

No more lonely cold nights or hearing that I'm bad
No more growling belly from the meals I never had.
No more scorching sunshine with a water bowl that's dry.
No more complaining neighbors about the noise when I cry.
No more hearing "shut up", "get down" or "get out of here"!
No more feeling disliked, only peace is in the air.
Euthanasia is a blessing, though some still can't see
why I was ever born If I weren't meant to be.
My last day of living was the best I ever had.
Someone held me very close, I could see she was very sad.
I kissed the lady's face, and she hugged me as she cried.
I wagged my tail to thank her, then I closed my eyes and died.

People who let their dogs and cats have litters in order to show their children the 'miracle of birth' should come witness the 'miracle of death' performed in the back rooms of animal shelters all over the country.
