Description
This item was on eBay, but did not get any bids due to a high starting
bid. I contacted the seller directly and bought it from him for a
lower price. He lives about 80km from Ottawa and delivered it for the
cost of gas.
The radio was made by Philips under the Rogers-Majestic name. It has a
European-looking style that is almost identical to some Grundig
models. Some of the interesting features are:
- power transformer with 6.3V tubes
- piano key power and band-selection buttons
- AM, FM (extended) and 2 shortwave bands
- separate AM and FM tuning knobs and dials
- tuning dial has Civil Defense frequencies indicated (common on radios
made during the height of the Cold War era)
- FM tuning uses variable inductors rather than capacitors
- miniature magic-eye tube
- "stereo" audio output on back
- rectifier tube is mounted on a bracket on top of the power transformer
- external antenna and ground connection
- 5 tone pushbuttons (2 base, 3 treble)
- wooden case with plastic front
I have a schematic (it is for a model RG-5050 which appears to be the
same as this RG-5050A model).
The magic eye was not working, and after a lot of experimentation I
convinced myself the problem had to be the tube. I ordered a
replacement and it worked fine. It did not need any work other than a
little cleaning.
