Description

This is a pretty standard AA5 AM radio with an intercom feature. A switch selects between phone/radio modes and another between speak/listen. In phone mode, it can operate as an intercom with a remote unit connected by an audio cable. The speaker does double duty as a microphone when in "speak" mode. I do not have the remote unit; these apparently are quite rare.

It uses the typical AA5 lineup of miniature tubes. The circuitry is on a printed circuit board, a little rare for a set of this vintage. Someone added an extra switch to disconect the speaker(?). The extra hole drilled in the case for the switch caused a crack. The internal loop antenna is built into the inside back of the case, using a wiring method resembling a printed circuit. Tuning is via a plain knob directly on the tuning cap. It has the two Civil Defense frequency markings in it.

As received, the line cord was partially broken off, the wires to the internal loop antenna were broken, and there was a lot of black grime inside the plastic case. The wiring had been modified for the extra switch and insulated with hockey tape (it is a Canadian radio, eh?).

I gave it a through cleaning. I've never seen a set with so much greasy black grime inside. The extra switch was removed and wiring cleaned up. No parts needed to be replaced. The set worked the first time I powered it up.

The remote unit is simply a speaker. I connected a speaker to the remote unit connector and confirmed that the intercom feature does work. In radio mode the remote unit plays to the remote unit as well.

The radio is listed in the Bunis collector's guide on page 182 and is valued at $15 to $20.
