The Birth Story
On December 5, 2001, my water broke at 6:00am. I calmly got up and got ready to go to the hospital. I woke Tim up & very gently said "I need you to calmly get up and get dressed because we need to go the hospital, my water broke." His response was..."You're kidding!" Of course I wasn't, so he did like I said and we headed to the hospital, arriving around 7:30am.
After putting me on the monitor for a couple of hours, and running the usual tests for determining the breakage of membranes, they still hadn't drawn the conclusion that my water *had* in fact broken. So, upon direction of my OB, they had an ultrasound preformed. The results came back around 11:30am that my membranes had really ruptured (go figure) so they started a pitocin drip by noon. They had to do this because I wasn't in labor at all..no contractions!
By 3:00pm, the contractions were very strong. I was dialated 7 cm but the baby was still at -1. A little while later Dr.Perrott gave me stadol...what a drug! lol But it wore off very quickly. They gave me another dose about an hour later. Then that wore off quickly too. During this time, they had placed an internal monitor on the baby because his/her hearrtbeat was fluctuating with the contractions. Dr. Perrott watched it for a while and then it stabilized. The time was flying by for me by then. I can only imagine how the family was feeling out in the waiting room. They were taking turns coming in to see me 2 by 2! Of course, I don't remember much about their visits! lol The next visit by the doctor brought an epidural. Horray! I was worried about the pain, but I was pretty out of it because of the stadol. Well, I hardly felt anything! Tim was standing in fron tof me so I could lean on him. He wasn't even waching the epidural being administered, but I felt him swaying all the same! The dr & the nurses kept asking if he needed to sit down. My resilient husband refused, and he never passed out ;)
While they administered the epidural, they stopped the pitocin drip. Needless to say my contractions came to a complete stop. I was still at 7 cm, no progress. So they started the drip again with the hopes of avoiding a c-section. My OB only goes for 18 hours after the membranes rupture because of chance of infection/stress/etc. She had all intentions of letting us try into the morning for a natural birth. She was comfortable doing that as long as the baby was doing good, and Mom was doing good. Then my tempurature went up to 105 degrees. She returned to the room and said that she was taking away the option of vaginal delivery, that she had to do a c-section now. I was very upset. I think I was just very scared after hearing everyone else's horror stories about c-sections.
They took me in to surgery, and Tim proceeded to get dressed to join us in the room. I was pretty drugged by the time he got in there, and before I knew it someone was saying "It's a girl!" I couldn't believe it. I think my first words to Tim were "Did they say it's a girl? Is it really a girl?" It was a wonderful experience. Tim went with the baby to the nursery while they finished with me.
A little while later I was in recovery, and doing very well. Tim came in and then came our little girl...in a Christmas stocking! He held her for the first time & the nurse took our first family picture...and what a doozy it is! lol We couldn't be happier with the whole experience. Even though a c-section wasn't our first choice, Mom & baby are better for it, and we recovered very quickly. We are now home and learning to enjoy our new family life.
