One fine day Jack was eating a big breakfast of homemade yuck which was left over from supper the day before. Jack's mother comes in the front door with her hair in large curlers, an old faded housecoat and a pound and half of cream on her face. Jack looks up and lets out a yell. Yuck runs out of his mouth and onto the table.

"Jack, how many times have I told you keep the yuck off the table? You know it eats holes in the table and ruins the floor," she said. Jack wipes his face with a napkin and cleans the table. "I'm sorry, mother, here's a new hole." His mother shakes her head in disgust and shuffles across the floor.

Jack jumps up from the table. "I've got so much to do today. They are digging a new well on the far side of town. I'm going over there to watch."

"No you are not! Our cupboard is bare, the yuck is gone, and you ruined the table. Take the goat to town and sell her," said Jack's mother.

"Sell the goat!" Jack yells. He drops to the floor laughing and rolls out the front door. "What's so funny?" she asks. Jack sits up slowly, "Well just look at her. She has knock knees in the front, bowed legs in the back, her eyes are crossed, she's got one ear, her tail has been broken twice, she has the mange and…" "And she gives good milk. Now get going," Jack's mother orders.

Jack gets up and puts a rope on the goat. Come on, Your Majesty, let's go," Jack said, dragging the goat by the neck. The goat expressed her feelings about the rope and leaving, but to no avail.

"You're not a bad goat, just one of the funniest things that I've ever seen," Jack said to the goat. They walked another mile when Jack met a beautiful girl sitting by the road. She looks up and her eyes get bigger and bigger. "Oh, I must have you," she said jumping up.

Jack drops the rope and opens his arms and runs toward the girl. She opens her arms and runs past Jack. She hugs the goat and said, "I must have you." She looks up to Jack with big blue eyes and said, "I must have this goat. Please I'll do anything to get this goat."

Jack smiles a wicked smile. Before he could speak, the girl jumped up and said, "I know. I'll trade you this package of magic pumpkin seeds for the goat." Jack just stands there smiling. She puts the package of seeds in Jack's hand and led the goat away. He blinked his eyes and looked around. "She is so beautiful, I'd follow her anywhere. I better get home quick," Jack said putting the package of seeds in his pocket.

Jack burst into the house. "I'm home," Jack yells. His mother is sitting at the table. "Jack, this is a one-room house. You do not have to yell. Besides I can see you are home. How much money did you get for the goat?" she asks. "Goat?" Jack said with a evil smile.

The goat, Jack, you do remember the goat you took to sell. How much money did you get for the goat?" Jack stands there staring at the wall. A minute later he said, "Oh, the goat. I got these magic pumpkin seeds from this beautiful girl. "You got magic seeds and she got your goat? To bed with you, there will be no supper for you tonight!" she yelled.

Jack climbs into bed, "Maybe I can dream about her. I hope I can." He closes his eyes and smiles.

"Magic seeds, indeed! I'll see how far I can throw these," Jack's mother said walking to the window.

Morning came early for Jack. He got up and looked out the window. There was a large pumpkin out in the front yard. "Mother, mother. Wake up! Look outside!" Jack yelled. "No more yuck from now on. We can have something else. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin pudding."

Jack's mother's voice is heard, "Jack, Jack, wake up! I want you to take the goat to town and sell her. Jack opens his eyes and smiles a wicked smile.
