and is the only daughter and child of E=yah=chu=tlee, a brother of Doublehead, and
Chau=e=u=kah ^is her mother, and was then a grown woman about 19 years old= and

does not know where it is now = affiant declares most solemnly on her oath that she never
sold them to any body nor been paid one dollar for them--

"all of the above described negroes were there before the Georgia negroes were brought
there, & applicant states that a white man named Chisholm was gone to Georgia to collect
money due Old Doublehead when he was killed & shortly after that Chisholm returned
with nine grown negroes from Georgia and left them there as a part of Doubleheads
property
and said he got those nine negroes in place of the money due unto Doublehead = affiant

"[Prince] according to her best [yu agrement] of the value of such articles of property &
affiant states that Doublehead had a store there and a white man named Phillips was the
clerk and [rate for ach] and the Cherokee people came there daily and bought goods for
cash and Phillips refused to sell goods on a credit to the Cherokees. it was a comendable
stock worth about two or three thousand dollars, and Doublehead told affiant just before
he was killed that he had three thousand dollars in a trunk in the store room=affiant sais
large quantities of money in Phillips hands but cannot state how much as she never
counted it; affiant did not know of her uncle buying any thing after that time and thinks
there
would have been as much as more than $3000 cash on hand==affiant admits it to be true
that she does not know so well about the store and the money because Phillips the white
man had the entire IOU that of it when Doublehead was died and and did not show the
money any more and did not communicate the situation of it to affiant == that year a
white
man named Samuel [Llebarrinan alrevcee d] for Doublehead and was making a good crop
and [anocianally] all the ^big negroes [icraekill] out. -- The [Observer] quit there [loan]
after Doublehead was killed == Bird Doublehead and his brother were sent to school and
boarding at the [Clarks] and Peggy Peggy and Sucunnah and [Fley] will [aff aho] None of
the children of Doublehead were there nor does affiant recollect of their comming there
== they were all very young. Bird was the aldest & many years younger than this affiant
and
no claims came through to protect their rights or secure their property == [lit surrued] that
after their father was killed by his people that the children were also endangered by the
nation == this affiant [averried] and managed as well as she could do.

Affiant states that as soon as the news came that Doublehead was killed Phillips shut up
the store and kept it shut up and quit selling goods == The crop was continued working
by the ^negroes the others [heuinep] of Doublehead went on untill towards fall when four
white men came there and stayed four or five days, -- these white men talked to Phillips a
good long time and they seemed to be counselling together but affiant could not
un=derstand them -- these white men after talked to the negroes and after about four days
councelling the white men asked affiant and her Aunts & [Soney] ^Thau=ti=ne - all
Doublehead and Wah=hatch a brother of Doublehead to [guerite] a [loam] and these one
of the
white man named Black proposed that all the negroes and horses and cattle and hogs and
all the remov=able property should be taken care off for the children of Old Doublehead
this Black was the man with whom Bird Doublehead had been and was there boording at
whoal = It was asked by the whites whether this should be done or not and none of the
Cherokees countered to it, but Phillips the store keeper gave his consent to it and he went
off with the three white men and they carried all the goods boxes and trunks and all
belongings to the store (off with them) and all the above described articles of property
and negroes, and cattle and horses and hogs [t&] off with them and they [neuii] ande paid
for
[norletuiua] any more == one of the negroes named Andrew who could speak and and
understand both English & Cherokee stated to affiant that he understood what the white
men
said and he told this affiant that these white men were not [meaning] to save the negroes
and the other prop=erty for the children of Doublehead and that they were [meaning] to
get
it all for their own use and fixing to steal it and that if the white men did act so with the
property he Andrew would run away and come back to the nation again. The other
negroes seemed to be concerned that these white men would take them to where Bird
Doublehead was and went cheerfully and the negroes assisted the white men in collecting
the
stock and loading up the waggon and one of the negroes drove off the team and the
plantation was left without any human beeing on it but her aunts and Wah=hatihi It was
the
understanding with all the Indians that the children were to have all this property at last.
Wah=hatih got some Indians to [aprint hein] and they gathered the crops and put it away
and no more white men came there to [couriett] for the goods of hte heirs of Old
Doublehead, and this affiant and her two Aunts [Sorrey & Ks=ti=e=ie=ah Doublehead
and
Wah=hatih [mode urea it thermires] ==Black and these other white men did not say that
Doublehead owed them money, but only said that the property should be taken care of for
the use of his heirs and this affiant and other [kinfolks] did not consent [uren] to that for
this affiant these thoughts are known at the time that this affiant and the other Cherokees
could have taken as good [coreafit] as these friendly white men could do.

More About Chief Doublehead:
Blood: Full Blooded Cherokee--Paint Clan

Children of Chief Doublehead and Creat Priber are:
183	i.	Princess Cornblossom Doublehead, born Abt. 1758 in Stearns, Sand Cliffs, McCreary Co., KY; died August 13, 1810 in Stearns, Sand Cliffs, McCreary Co., KY; married George Jacob Troxell 1780 in Wayne or Whitley County, KY ?.
ii.	Tuckaho Doublehead, born 1762; married Margaret Mounce in Chery Fork, now Helenwood, TN; born 1768.

Notes for Tuckaho Doublehead:
[Matthews1.FTW]

Tuckahoe was the brother of Cornblossom and the son of Chickamaugan Chief
Doublehead. After the Treaty of Sycamore Shoals, Chief Doublehead and his wife,
accompanied by Cornblossom and her brother Tuckahoe, moved to Hines' Cave, in what
we know as Wayne County Kentucky today. This treaty required all Cherokees to leave
the country north of the Cumberland River. Jacob Troxel, or Big Jake, was assigned to
work with the Indians of the Upper Cumberland River. He made friends with a young
Cherokee brave named Tuckahoe after he reached the old French trading post at Vincennes which
was the center of the western Indian trade. After their journey of about 200 miles
Big Jake and young Tuckahoe came to Tuckahoe's home where Big Jake met Chief
Doublehead and was received by the chief with great respect and ceremony due a distinguished
visitor.
Not long after the close of the Revolutionary War, John Mounce and family moved
to a homestead located at the mouth of Rock Creek on the Big South Fork of the
Cumberland River. Mounce had two beautiful daughters. Tuckahoe, fell in love with one of them,
Margaret Mounce. The young couple thought it would be romantic if she were taken by
Tuckahoe in an elopement. After several hours Margarets' sister told her father that
Tuckahoe had stolen Margaret. John very upset, accompanied by Jones a neighbor,
pursued them for many miles. He finally overtook them near the present town of
Monticello, Fearing her fathers' reaction Margaret threw her arms around Tuckahoe
to protect him from harm, thus preventing her father from shooting Tuckahoe. Soon
after this event, John Mounce gave his consent to the marriage of his daughter
Margaret to the handsome Tuckahoe. Tuckahoe and Margaret Mounce were married
and lived at Che-ry Fork, now Helenwood, Tennessee.
The most prized possession of Chief Doublehead's tribe was a secret silver mine
located somewhere adjacent to the Cumberland River in the general area of today's
McCreary, Pulaski, and Wayne counties, Kentucky. The location of this silver mine
was a tribe secret which had never been revealed to a white man. A white trader,
Han Blackberne, learned of this mine and was determined to find it. He offered to
sell young Tuckahoe a fine rifle decorated With silver, together with a fancy powder
orn and a fringed bullet pouch for a small amount of silver from the mine. Tuckahoe
eagerly agreed. As he went to the secret mine for the silver, he was followed by
Blackberne and a hired laborer by the name of Monday. As Tuckahoe was digging the
silver to pay for his new rifle, the two white men appeared. While remonstrating with
Blackberne for following him, he laid down a pick which he had been using. Monday,
a simple-minded individual, grabbed the pick and struck Tuckahoe on the head killing
him instantly. Monday then threw Tuckahoe's body down a deep crevice between two
large rocks and covered it with leaves, dead branches and loose rock. He and Blackberne then
started digging for silver.
In the meantime Princess Cornblossom learned of the deal of Tuckahoe with
Blackberne and, suspecting that the trader planned to follow him to the mine, also started for
the mine as rapidly as her little legs would carry her in an attempt to stop her
brother before he reached the mine site. On approaching the mine she saw the tracks of
Blackberne and Monday which confirmed her suspicions. Creeping forward cautiously
she arrived at the mine where she observed the trader Blackberne resting under a tree and
his hired hand Monday digging the silver. While her brother was not in sight, her
worst fears were confirmed by the sight of his new rifle leaning against a tree
and large pools of blood scattered about the mine where Tuckahoe had been killed.
Realizing what had happened, Princess Cornblossom dashed forward, grabbed the rifle,
horn and pouch and sped down the trail so swiftly that Blackberne and Monday were
unable to catch her. Fortunately a violent thunderstormapproached on the south and
west on the headwaters of Poncho Creek and along the Little South Fork, which made
further tracking impossible. The Princess, having reached the top of the mountain,
quickly built a shelter at the site of a fallen tree, picked wild grapes and chestnuts
for her evening meal, and eathered the storm through the night in comfort, but with a
heavy heart at the death of her brother Tuckahoe.
Resolved to avenge his death, as well as to guard the secret of the tribe's
mine, she planned to kill both Blackberne and Monday before they could reveal
the location of the mine to any other white man.At the break of dawn she knew that
some of her tribe would be searching for her. Sounding the tribal distress call
she was answered immediately by two braves less than two miles distant. Knowing
that Blackberne and Monday would probably head for their trading station near
the Fonde settlement (near what is now Williamsburg, in Whitley County, Kentucky)
and that Poncho Creek was a raging torrent as a result of the thunderstorm
it appeared Blackberne and Monday would be most likely to cross the creek at
Turtleneck Ford. This ford (now called Cracker's Neck) is located about three miles
west of the present town of Stearns, Kentucky.
Princess Comblossom concealed herself on the steep hillside overlooking the
ford, posted the two braves in concealment near the creek, and awaited the appearance
of Blackberne and Monday. After a long wait she saw a glint of a shiny buckle and a
fancy coat and another from the handle of a hunting knife and knew that the white
men were approaching. Carefully renewing the priming in the pan of Tukahoe's fine
flintlock rifle, she rested the heavy barrel in the fork of a dogwood tree and waited.
Arriving at Poncho Creek and finding it in flood Blackberne dismounted to inspect the
ford before trying to cross. Sighting down the long sleek barrel, glistening with bear
oil, Princess Comblossom took careful aim and pressed the trigger. As the shot sounded
lackbern fell to earth dead of a bullet through his heart. The two braves quickly
tomahawked Monday, disemboweled both bodies, filled them with rocks and threw them
in the raging Poncho Creek. At last the death of the brave Tuckahoe was revenged and
the secret of the tribe's silver mine was again safe.

[Matthews1.FTW]

Myths of the Cherokee, James Mooney, pg 108;
....by a KY family it is claimed......Sequoya's father was Nathaniel Gist, son of the scout who accompanied George Washington on his memorable excursion to the Ohio. As the story goes, Nathaniel Gist was captured by the Cherokee at Braddock's defeat (1755) and remained a prisoner with them for six years, during which time he became the father of Sequoyah. On his return to civilization, he married a white woman in VA, by whom he had other children, and afterward moved back to KY, where Sequoyah, then a Baptist preacher, frequently visited them and was always recognized by the family as his son.

*********************************************************************************************************

Old Frontiers, pg 158;
Nathaniel Gist first appeared among the Cherokees as a messenger of Governor Dinwiddie in 1755. Following the French and Indian War he formed a trading partnership with Richard Pearis and lived in the Cherokee country for several years. During that time he took as his Indian wife, Wurteh, sister of Chief Old Tassel, and became the father of Sequoyah.

active leadership role in the growth and development of Sullivan County, NC

The General Assembly of NC had, in October 1779, passed legislation setting up a neighboring county to Washington
Co., This new county was named Sullivan County, to honor Revolutionary War hero, General John Sullivan. The
Justices of the Peace in the new county, were, among several others, Isaac Shelby and David Looney. The men met
on Feb. 7th, 1780 at the log home/fort of Moses Looney to organize the government of the new county.

Quoting the,SULLIVAN CO. NEWS, Vol 36, #6, dated February 7, 1980, Which was the 200th birthday of Sullivan
Co, state:
"John Rhea was appointed Clerk and Nathan Clark, Sheriff. Isaac Shelby exhibited a commission from Governor
Caswell, of North Carolina, dated November 19th, 1779, appointing him Colonel-Commandant, of the county. Other
commissions appointed were Henry Clark,k Lieutenant-Colonel, David Looney, First Major and John Shelby,
Second Major, according to the documents.

Looney's Fort is still standing. Behind the protective covering of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pope, Sr., the
log fort is virtually intact and Sullivan contains have the unique privilege of standing in the exact location where their
county was officially organized 200 years ago."

Moytoy Pigeon, of Tellico
Supreme Chief of the Cherokee 1730--1760
**********************************************
The Eastern Band of Cherokee, by John R. Finger, Univ of TN Press, Knoxville: [Early Cherokee society was atomized into clans with individual chiefs]...
Sir Alexander Cuming boldly addressed this problem in 1730 by traveling to Cherokee country and proclaiming a single chief, Moytoy, as the first chief and King of his people.
*********************************************************************************
Moytoy:
a Cherokee chief recognized by the English as "emperor" in 1730. Both the correct form and the meaning of the name are uncertain; the name occurs again as Moyatoy in a document of 1793; a boy upon the East Cherokee reservation a few years ago bore the name of Ma'tayi, for which no meaning can be found or given.
***********************************************************************************************
Old Frontiers, by John P. Brown, also details a Moytoy of Settico who was rampaiging through VA after the death of "Emperor" Moytoy of Tellico, and in the Colonial Records of South Carolina, 1754-1765, a letter dated 1-31-1957 references a "Moyatoya" son to the Mankiller of Highwassey deceased.

A'gansta'ta
The Great Warrior
*******************
A'gansta'ta:
"groundhog-sausage", from a'gana, groundhog, and tista'u, "I am pounding it", understood to refer to pounding meat, ect, in a mortar, after having first crisped it before the fire. A war chief, noted in the Cherokee war of 1760, and prominent until about the close of the Revolution, known to the whites as Oconostota. Also the Cherokee name for Colonel Gideon Morgan of the war of 1812, for Washington Morgan, his son, of the Civil War, and now for a ful-blood upon the reservation, known to the whites as Morgan Calhoun.

"Another requirement (of the peace treaty to end the Cherokee-English war of 1760) was that the head men of the nation, Oconostota being mentioned specifically, were to assemble at Charles Town on December 16, 1761 to ratify the treaty, and this they did. Oconostota, however, was still very wary of trusting himself within the power of the English, but send his brother Kitegista with a peace pipe to represent him.

Notes for Capt. John Colt:
m. (l) ? Mary Fitch, dau Joseph
m. (2) Ann Skinner, dau John & Mary (Loomis) Skinner, b. l639; appeared on a list of Windsor Freeman, 27 Apr 1703. He
and Mary Skinner were employees of Joseph Mygatt, a weaver, who had received a license to sell strong liquors by retail.
John Allyn's servant Ann Skinner was still single in Jun 1659 and probably that December. She evidently married John Colt
soon afterward, she was his "wife" at Springfield, just North of Windsor and at Hartford during July 1663.
NER, April 1996, p. 215 (Corrections); "John Edwards of Wethersfield, Connecticut" by Gale Ion Harris (145[1991]:317-
341). The following corrections are made by the author:
145: pp. 326, 329-30. John1 Colt was living and "of Windsor" as late as Sept. 1713 when he conveyed land at Podunk to his
"dutiful son" Benjamin Colt of Windsor (Windsor Deeds, 3:182). A more recent study of the Fitch family shows that John1
Colt almost certainly did not have a third wife, Lydia Fitch, a
possibility considered likely in the Edwards article. For a full discussion, see my article, "The Children of Capt Joseph1 and
Mary (Stone) Fitch of Hartford and Windsor, Connecticut," The American Genealogist 68, [1993]:1-10.
145: p. 332; No. 3.v. JABEZ2 COLT (John1) had several daughters in addition to the three children - Ann, Esther and Jabez -
named in the article. The will of "Jabez Colt Senior of Windsor," signed by mark 9 Jun 1756 and proved at Hartford on 19 Jul
1757, gives land "on podunk River" in [South] Windsor to "my son" Jabez Colt, "all my household goods" to "my daughter"
Esther Colt, L10 each to "my daughters" Ann Smith, Mary Post, Lydia Loomis, and Mabel Dunk, and "my loom" to "my
Granson" John Hays. He appointed son Jabez Colt executor; Daniel Burr, Daniel Burr Jr. and George Pitkins witnessed
(Hartford District Probates, file 1951). Mary Colt m. at Saybrook, Conn., 2 Jan 1734/5, Benjamin4 Post, b. there 3 Jan

Sturtevant of Wolfeboro, NH for a photocopy of Jabez Colt's will at the Connecticut State Library, Hartford.
This will take much more study; earlier source gives lst marriage to Mary Fitch, dau of Joseph.
Genealogical Memoirs of the Families of Colt and Coutts, Rev. Charles Rogers, LL.D., London, 1879; has much info on
earlier Colts in England, but no connection given. p. 48,49; John Colt, a member of the Colts of that ilk, accompanied Dr.
Hooker to America in 1636, w ho first ministered to a congregation at Cambridge, near Boston, then called Newtown, and
afterwards settled at Hartford, CT. Dr. Hooker returned to England, leaving at Hartford, his protege, who married a dauof
Joseph Fitch, receiving in dowry a house and lot called Padwick, in South Windsor, near Hartford. His father-in-law was
ancestor of John Fitch, the inventor of the first application of steam in America. John Colt signed his name Coult. His first
recorded signature is in 1646 at his daughter's baptism, on 7 Feb of that year. John Colt had three sons, John, Joseph and
Abraham. In 1656, John Colt, John Adams (an ancestor of President John Adams), and others, were fined five shillings for
playing at cards at an unseasonable hour of night, the judges being Governor Webster, Lt- Gov. Mill, Mr. Clerk (Clarke?) and
Mr. Willis (Wyllys?). In 1665 John Colt described as of Padwick, subscribed a sum of money to raise the salary of the
Presbyterian minister. On 17 Oct 1669, he was approved freeman, and allowed as such to take the oath. He appears in 1675
as reporting to the Council that he had been shot at by Indians. On l Sep of that year he reported that another party of Indians
were discovered in the North Meadows, and measures were taken to resist them. He is named as an appraiser in 1679 and
1689. He married a daughter of John Skinner and in 1662, received a portion of his father-in-law's estate; he died at the age of
ninety five years.
Family History: New England Families #2, cd 159-
The name of Dutton Colt appears often in English history. Because he opposed popery
he was dispossessed of his estate, but he afterward regained it by valiant service for his country, and also was granted one of
the coats-of-arms of the Colt family. Very likely he was son of Sir Oliver Colt. The names of Sir Thomas, Sir Henry and Sir
George Colt are also to be found. The line is probably as
follows: (I) Sir Peter Colt, a peer of England, son of Sir John Dutton Colt. (II) John, son of Sir Peter Colt. (III) John (2), son of
John (1) Colt. (IV) John (3), son of John (2) Colt.
(V) John (4), son of John (3) Colt, immigrant ancestor, was born in England about the year 1625. He came from Colchester,
England, during the troubles of Charles I., when eleven years old. In 1638 he removed from Dorchester, Massachusetts, to
Hartford, with a colony that came there in that year. He
married, afterward, (???) Skinner, and settled in Windsor. He doubtless married (second) Mary, daughter of Joseph Fitch,
from whom he received land in Windsor for love and goodwill. He was one of the early
settlers on the east side of the river, and was troubled much by the Indians. In 1665 he subscribed six shillings to raise the
minister's salary. He lived to the age of one hundred and five years. Child: John, mentioned below.
(VI) John (5), son of John (4) Colt, was born in 1658.
John Coult was born about 1625 in or near Colchester, England, and came to New England aboard the ship "Griffin" , arriving
4 Sep 1633. He lived in Dorchester, MA, and Hartford, CT, before settling in the Podunk section of East Windsor where he
was an apprentice to Joseph Mygatt. He married as his second wife, Ann Skinner, who was born in 1639 and died 9 Aug
1680, daughter of John & Mary (Loomis) Skinner. They had a son Benjamin. Ref: Edward P. Jones: "Descendants of John
Coult," MS in CT State Library, Hartford, 1934, pp. 1, 4. J. Hammond Trumbull: "The Memorial History of Hartford Co.,
CT," 1886, vol I, p. 259.
A deed from John Coult of Windsor reads: "for dear love and tender affection" to "my loving and dutiful son Benjamin Coult of
the town aforesaid," land in Windsor "on the East side of the Great River," adjoining the land of Joseph Coult. This was signed
25 Sep 1713. Ref: Windsor Land Records, Deed Book 3, p. 182.

Old Hop
the Fire King of Chota

Old Frontiers, pg. 46;
"old Hop had a nephew, also named Standing Turkey, an active warrier who at his uncle's death served a short time as his successor. It was the younger Standing Turkey who conducted a four day assault upon Fort Loudon in 1760, and who signed the articles of capitulation of the stronghold.
************************************************************************************************
Old Frontiers, pg. 67;
Old Hop in his talk to Demere, gave his unusual evidence of patriotism. He said: "I am now old and lie upon a bad bearskin. My life is not more than an inch long, and I know not when a bullet may cut it short. I want my brothers Captains Demere and Stuart to remember that the Great Warrior, Oconostota, and his brother (Amo-Scossite), are the only two men in the nation that ought to be thought of after my death. It is true that Willenawah and the Little Carpenter are my nephews, but I do not know how they would behave. If I had not remembered what I owe to a country I love, and had in mind to behave like a father, I would recommend my two sons, but I know them to be incapable, and biased by every lie that comes. I do not know how they will turn out, but I do know the others, for drunk or sober, they always admonish the Indians to love the white people."
