MINIATURE HORSE INFORMATION

Ever see a real live horse that is 34” or less? A live tiny horse that is perfectly-proportioned? Well, that’s what a Miniature Horse is!

Miniature horses can be found all over the world and are available in every color!  All horses registered with the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) must measure 34" and under as adults.  In the American Miniature Horse Registry (AMHR), Division A miniatures must be 34 inches and under and Division B miniatures must be over 34 inches, up to and including 38 inches.  Both registries' height measurements constitute the vertical distance from the base of the last hairs on the mane to the ground.  Miniatures must meet the Standards of Perfection which have been carefully studied and written to provice specific guidelines for breeding show-type animals.

Miniature horses are  hardy little animals that can withstand extremely cold winter weather if they are well nourished and in good condition.  Only minimal shelter is necessary when they aren't clipped and  are allowed to grow their full winter coats.  Often a herd of miniatures will stand out in the rain or snow, even when shelter is readily available.  Although miniature horses are shown in their natural coats throughout Europe, they are usually body clipped for showing in the United States.  When clipped, they must be kept blanketed during cold weather.

There is no more economical horse to keep!  To calculate the cost of keeping a miniature, divide the cost of keeping a 1,000 pound horse by about 4.  Hay, grain, size and type of pasture, worming products, hoof trimming, mineral salt blocks and minimal fencing and shelters all cost about a quarter of the amount a full size horse requires.

Miniatures are shown in breed and performance classes.  Breed classes include those divided by ages, sexes, heights and colors.  These classes are judged by choosing the animals that best meet the Standard of Perfection in quality, conformation and condition.  Performance events include classes such as pleasure driving, roadster, jumper, obstacle, harness, fine harness, costume, reinsmanship, etc.  There are many types of driving classes including two, four and six horse hitches and are exhibited in addition to shows, at parades and state fairs.

Miniatures are gentle and loving and have wonderful dispositions; in addition to being highly intelligent!

Intelligent and loving, easy to care for, miniatures can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
