H² J¹ 16:1-4. Collectively. J² 16:5–17:18. Seveally.
1444 to 1443 B.C.
16)
1: And the lot (see 14:1) of the sons of Joseph fell (= came forth, i.e from the bag behind the High Priest's breastplate, the Thummim meaning "yes". See Ex.28:30 and Num.26:55) from Jordan by Jericho, to the water of Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goes up from Jericho throughout mount Bethel (= house of El [God]),
2: And goes out from Bethel to Luz (cp. Gen.28:19 and Judg.1:26: the "Mount" Beth-el of v.1), and passes along to the borders of the Archite (= length. Cp. 2 Sam.15:32; 16:16) to Ataroth,
3: And goes down westward to the coast of Japhleti (= whom El [God] delivers), to the coast of Beth-horon (= house of caverns) the lower, and to Gezer (= a precipice): and the goings out thereof are at the sea.
4: So the sons of Joseph (= increase), Manasseh (= forgetful) and Ephraim (= double fruitfulness), took their inheritance.
J² e 16:5-9. Ephraim. Possessed. f 16:10. Unexpelled. e 17:1-11. Manasseh. Possessed. f 17:12-18. Unexpelled.
5: And the border (or boundary) of the sons of Ephraim according to their families turned out to be: even the border of their inheritance on the east side was Ataroth-addar (= crowns-high), to Beth-horon the upper;
6: And the border went out toward the sea to Michmethah (= hiding-place) on the north side; and the border went about eastward to Taanath-shiloh (= approach to place of rest), and passed by it on the east to Janohah (= rest);
7: And it went down from Janohah to Ataroth, and to Naarath, and came to Jericho (= place of fragrance), and went out at Jordan (= the descender).
8: The border went out from Tappuah (= the apple-city) westward to the river Kanah (= a place of reeds); and the goings out thereof were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Ephraim by their families.
9: And the separate cities for the sons of Ephraim were among the inheritance of the children of Manasseh, all the cities with their villages.
10: And they drave not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer (Gross disobedience to the repeated command of Yehovah. Cp. Ex.23:31. Deut.7:2, &c. See 1 Kings 9:16,7): but the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day, and serve under tribute.

17)
1: There was also the lot (cp. 16:1) for the tribe of Manasseh (= forgetful); for he was the firstborn of Joseph (Gen.41:51; 46:20; 50:23. Num.32:39); to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gilead (= rocky region) and Bashan (= fruitful).
2: There was also a lot for the rest of the sons of Manasseh by their families; for the sons of Abiezer (= father of help, helpful), and for the sons of Helek (= portion), and for the sons of Asriel (= vow of El [God]), and for the sons of Shechem (= back, or shoulder), and for the sons of Hepher (= a well), and for the sons of Shemida (= wise): these were the male sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.
3: But Zelophehad (= first-born. Cp. Num.26:33; 27:1; 36:2), the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but he had daughters: and these are the names of his daughters, Mahlah (= disease), and Noah (= motion), and Hoglah (= partridge), and Milcah (= queen, or counsel), and Tirzah (= delight).
4: And they came near before Eleazar the priest (his presence necessary for the casting of the lots, with the Urim and Thummim. See. Ex.28:30, and Num.26:55), and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, “Yehovah commanded Moses (some codices read "by the hand of Moses": "hand" being put for what is done by it) to give us an inheritance among our brethren.” Therefore according to the commandment of the Lord (Yehovah) he gave them an inheritance among the brethren of their father.
5: And there fell (i.e. by lot. Cp. v.1) ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan;
6: Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons:
and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.
7: And the boudary of Manasseh was from Asher (= blessed) to Michmethah (= hiding-place), that lies before Shechem (= back or shoulder); and the border went along on the right hand to the inhabitants of En-tappuah (= fount of the apple-city).
8: Now Manasseh had the land of Tappuah: but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the sons of Ephraim;
9: And the boundary descended to the river Kanah, southward of the river: these cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh: the coast of Manasseh also was on the north side of the river, and the utmost limits of it were at the sea:
10: Southward it was Ephraim's, and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea is his border; and they met together in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east.
11: And Manasseh had in Issachar (= reward) and in Asher Beth-shean (= house of rest) and her towns (Heb. dughters. Fig. Prosopopœia = villages), and Ibleam (= devouring the people) and her villages, and the inhabitants of Dor (= dwelling) and her villages, and the inhabitants of Endor (= fountain of dwelling) and her villages, and the inhabitants of Taanach (= sandy) and her villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo (= place of crowds) and her villages, even three countries.
12: Yet the sons of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities (cp. 15:63; 16:10; and see Ex.23:31. Deut.7:2, &c.); but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.
13: Yet it came to pass, when the sons of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.
14: And the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua (i.e. Manasseh. Note their selfishness, so well reproved by Joshua [vv.15-18], who was of that tribe himself), saying, “Why have you given me but one lot and one portion to inherit (Heb. "line", put for the territory marked out by it), seeing I am a great people, to such a degree as the Lord (Yehovah) has blessed me hitherto?”
15: And Joshua answered them, “If you be a great people, then get you go up to the wood country, and cut down (= carve out, or create as in Gen.1:1) for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants (= Rephiam. See Num.13:22. Deut.1:28, and Gen.6:2,4), if mount Ephraim be too narrow for you.”
16: And the sons of Joseph said, “The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel.”
17: And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, “You are a great people, and have great power: you shall not have one lot only:
18: But the mountain shall be yours; for it is a wood, and you shall cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be yours: for you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.
18)
1: And the whole congregation of the sons of Israel assembled together at Shiloh (= tranquillity or peace. Cp. Gen.49:10), and set up the tent of the congregation there (Heb. ’ohel. It remained here [Judg.21:12.1 Sam.1:3; 3:3] till the Philistines took the ark [1 Sam.4:11]. In the days of Sal it was at Nob [of Benjamin, 1 Sam.21:1; 22:19], and at Gibeon at beginning of Solomon's reign [1 Kings 3:5. 2 Chron.1:3]. Cp. Ps.78:60,67,68. Jer. 7:12). And the land was subdued before them.

2: And there remained among the sons of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet received their inheritance.
3: And Joshua said to the sons of Israel, “How long are you all slack to go to possess the land, which the Lord God (Yehovah Elohim) of your fathers has given you?
4: Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and walk to and fro in the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.
5: And they shall divide it into seven parts (tracing the boundaries by the ravines, it is said there is some resemblance in outline to the tribal signs, as given in notes on Num. 2): Judah shall abide in their boundary on the south, and the house of Joseph shall abide in their boundary on the north.
6: You all shall therefore map out the land into seven parts, and bring the description (the Fig. Ellipsis may be filled in by saying "the surveys or maps") to this place to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the Lord (Yehovah) our God (Elohim).
7: But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the Lord (Yehovah) is their inheritance: and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of Yehovah gave them.”

8: And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, “Go and walk through the land (see"go" of v. 4), and describe it, and come again to me, that I may here cast lots for you before the Lord (Yehovah) in Shiloh.”
9: And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book (see Ex.17:14), and came again to Joshua to the host at Shiloh.
10: And Joshua cast lots (he directed Eleazar the priest, without whom no lot could be cast. See Ex.28:30. Num.26:55) for them in Shiloh before Yehovah: and there Joshua divided the land to the sons of Israel according to their divisions (some codices read, "in their portions").

11: And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin (Heb. = son of the right hand, fortunate) came up according to their families: and the boudary of their lot came forth (i.e. from the bag containing the Urim and Thummim) between the sons of Judah and the sons of Joseph.
12: And their border on the north side was from Jordan (= the descender); and the border went up to the side of Jericho (= place of fragrance) on the north side, and went up through the hill country westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Beth-aven (house of nothingness).
13: And the border went over from that place toward Luz (= almond tree), to the side of Luz, which is Bethel (house of El [God]), southward; and the border descended to Ataroth-adar (= crowns of high), near the hill that lies on the south side of the lower Beth-horon (house of caverns).
14: And the border was drawn from that place, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that lies before Beth-horon southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjath-baal (= city of lord [small "l"]), which is Kirjath-jearim (= city of forests), a city of the sons of Judah (= praised, celebrated): this was the west quarter.
15: And the south quarter was from the end of Kirjath-jearim, and the border went out on the west, and went out to the well of waters of Nephtoah (= opening):
16: And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lies before the valley of the son of Hinnom (= lamentation), and which is in the valley of the giants (Heb. Rephaim. See Num.13:22. Deut. 1:28. Gen.6:2,4) on the north, and descended to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi (= from threshing-floor) on the south, and descended to En-rogel (= fount of the fuller),
17: And was drawn from the north, and went forth to En-shemesh (= fountain of the sun), and went forth toward Geliloth (= circuit), which is over against the going up of Adummim (= the goin up to), and descended to the stone of Bohan (= thumb) the son of Reuben (= behold a son),
18: And passed along toward the side over against Arabah northward (= burnt up. See Deut.1:1), and went down to Arabah:
19: And the border passed along to the side of Beth-hoglah (partridge-house) northward: and the outgoings of the border were at the north bay of the salt sea at the south end of Jordan: this was the south coast.
20: And Jordan was the border of it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the boundaries thereof round about, according to their families.
21: Now the cities of the tribe of the sons of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho, and Beth-hoglah, and the valley of Keziz (= cut off),

19)
1: And the second lot came forth (see Ex.28:30. Num.26:55) to Simeon (= heard), even for the tribe of the sons of Simeon according to their families: and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the sons of Judah.

So they made an end of dividing the country.
