Newtown seal Jones deal

Newtown have completed the capture of defender Richard Jones on a free transfer. The deal also includes 4 sausages, 2 sandwiches in Barry's after each home game along with a chance of a seat at the coveted Barrel of Laugh's depending on performances.

The Leitrim international was available after being released by Ardcroney following 12 years with the 2nd division club.

The Ardcroney paid 2.5 milk tokens for the 22-year-old back in July 1993, but his time under John Redden was often blighted by high-profile blunders.

However, Newtown boss Paul Harty believes Jones best years are ahead of him and thinks he is the ideal signing to help the Newtownian's retain their Premiership status.

"The injury to Dan Hogan in the Tipperary semi final was a real hammer blow for us," explained Harty to the club's official website.

"I've moved quickly to rectify that situation by signing Richard Jones, who is an established defender.

"Richard comes to Newtown in his prime and because of his association with Ardcroney will not be fazed by the size of this club.

"I believe Richard's best years are ahead of him and when a club is re-introduced to the Premier League, as we are, defenders are an essential position in the team.

"Richard brings all the qualities we need for the coming campaign and we're delighted to have him as part of our squad.

"This will be the first of what I hope will be three or four more signings to strengthen the team for the challenge ahead."
