Monogram 1/48 B-17G Flying Fortress

The Flying Fortress was the primary daylight bomber used in the ETO during WWII. From 1942 to 1945 thousands of B-17's flew from bases in England to bomb Nazi Germany. The Monogram B-17 has been around now for over 20 years. I had built this model many years ago when it first came out. however, at that time I was more interested in getting the model done so I could play with it then I was in doing a good job. The kit is just OK. The interior is detailed but it's accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. The fit is poor. There are many gaps and seams that need filling. Especially around the nacelles. I used the Verlinden detail set. It contains PE and resing parts to replace kit details. You have the option of diplaying the bomb bay doors open with the detail set but that requires you to do a lot more work in the bomb bay area to make it presentable. There are numerous schemes to choose from depending on which unit and particular plane you want to depict. I opted for a freelance version. I used the Microscale decals for 'A Bit O' Lace' which was actually a late war NMF Fort. But being I was a bit apprehensive of applying a natural metal finish on this model I opted for a OD green and light grey early war scheme. This would be accurate for a earlt G model Fort. By the time the G was fully in use they all were NMF. Since it's my model I can take all the artistic license I want. I think this model captures the essence of a B-17 in WWII.
