Jenny's Disappointed AmeriCorps Blog |

The days are counting down. I only have four more weeks as an AmeriCorps. I then will re-enter society. How do I feel about this? Excited to move on to a new stage in my life and nervous that I won't be able to find a "real" job. Read up on my latest hopes, fears, crazy schemes, and the countdown to post-AmeriCorps life. | |||||||||||||||||||

Monday, November 1, 2004 Wow. It's November. I can't believe it. One the one hand I'm thrilled: the election is tomorrow, and I'll be able to get on with my life--hopefully under a Kerry Administration! But I'm not holding my breath. But, hey, the Red Sox won, so anything is possible! GWHFH continues to operate without a network--meaning my job is continuously difficult to perform. But I'm coping. The hardest part is not having a printer. I plan to do some serious organizing of the office today. It really is a mess! And Nancy means well when she cleans, but she puts things away, and then nobody can find them. I read a very interesting article on motherjones.com today about Bush's mysterious bulge during the debates. You may have caught my mention of it on my homepage. And have I mentioned the cartoons on Mother Jones? They're fabulous! Here's a recent sample. |

Tuesday, November 2, 2004 It's finally here! Election Day has finally arrived. I'm so excited--you'd think it was Christmas and I was getting a pony. Part of it is just a relief that it will (hopefully) all be over soon. I mean, I've been following this election since the summer of 2003. As fascinating as it all is, and as much as I have vested a lot of energy and passion into it, I'm now exhausted (not dissimilar to my AmeriCorps year). And part of it is the anticipation to see if the country comes to it's senses or not. Ira Glass's conversations with one undecided voter was rather enlightening. This voter disliked Bush a lot, and yet, he believed a lot of the anit-Kerry retoric. It was so deep-seated in him to be a Republican that even though he disagreed with Bush on almost everything--and also conceeded that Clinton was actually a great president--he couldn't bring himself to vote for Kerry. Quite amazing, really. It almost seems like a lot of the undecided voters (or people voting for Bush "anyway") really have a desire to cling to the fairytale of the Bush administration. It's fascinating! My voting experience was so anti-climatic. I got up this morning, brought the confirmation of my voter registration that was mailed to me along with a copy of my lease (just in case someone questioned my Wisconsin driver's license), a book (in case there's a line) and my breakfast (a banana, to eat in line). I decided to walk to the Canterbury Street School--my polling place--so that I wouldn't have to worry about where to park. But when I arrived there was no one there! Well, one person had just finished voting when I walked in, and of course there were the poll workers, but that was it. No line, no excited first time voters, no thing. The process for me went very smoothly, and even though I walked, I was back in my apartment within half-an-hour. But I voted, and that's what counts! * * * * * * * * 5:32pm Ugh, it's dark out, damn daylight savings time! Soon I'll be at the shelter, playing with homeless kids and trying not to think politics for a couple of hours. And then.... on to the local Democrat headquarters to wait with baited breath for results. Will I get any sleep tonight? But, the real reason I'm chiming in is as a service to my friend Sylvia from back in my Dallas days. She requests everyone to sign a petition asking FOX to release the cartoon series The Tick onto DVD. So, go sign the petition for Sylvia. Go now. It's your duty. Vote for Kerry and then sign the Tick petition! |

Wednesday, November 3, 2004 There really isn't much to say. I'm wearing all black, and I'm insulted by the sun shining. It was not easy to get out of bed this morning. It's going to be a long four more years. Anyone want to move to Luxembourg? It's a nice place. I've been there. |

Friday, November 5, 2004 Surprisingly, contrary to partisan belief, the world does not seem to be ending--at least not very dramatically. I have resumed wearing colors and have regained the power of speech. Am I happy, no. I am just resigned and perhaps still in a bit of shock and mourning because I really can't be bothered to think about it over much. But, on the GWHFH front: the network is back! Wahoo! Tomorrow I will not be on the job site because I will be attending an informational meeting about Planet Aid's new manager trainnee program. I'm very excited, and even as I apply to other jobs, I think this would be a great opportunity for me. :-) |
