What gear ratio for a different tire size ? If you already know which gear ratio works best for a specific tire size, and you need to know what gear ratio to use for a different tire size in order to get that same performance, The formula is at the top left of the above chart. Divide the new tire size by the old tire size. Multiply this number by the original gear ratio, and your result is the new required gear ratio. Just pick the appropriate gears from the chart above which provide this new ratio. In every case LARGER gears provide better performance than smaller gears, However, make sure you have adequate track clearance under the larger gears. A gear ratio is the number that you obtain by dividing the number of teeth on the spur (or crown) gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. The "overall gear ratio" which includes tire size serves no useful purpose and will not be included here. The simple formula to consider tire size follows the chart. |
