Orchard Road

Phoenix hotel

Orchard hotel A 20-minute drive from Changi International Airport and you're within walking distance to all the excitement and glamour of the famous Orchard Road- Singapore's shopping, tourist and entertainment hub. Here is where "shop till you drop" is more than just a casual activity...the domain of the elite, lured by the shopping centres, department stores, nightspots, restaurants, bars and lounges. High-class hotels are also in this area.

Our first day started in the afternoon actually. The climate was cool, since it had just rained, said the tour driver who took us to our hotel from the airport.

It was almost 7:30pm when we were able to get out and tour the shopping centers and malls around Orchard Road. Although Singapore is not the bargain centre it used to be, Orchard Road offers a mind-boggling choice of shops and stores. Also known as the food capital of Asia, sampling the local cuisine is an experience all by itself..

Not being that hungry after our heavy meal in the plane, our "experience" was just taking in the sights of all those strange-looking food at the food court at the topmost floor in one of the malls. We were each given a ticket as we entered one of the restaurants, which we could present to any of the food outlets. As we came out the exit, the cashier summed up the food entries on the ticket. Quite a system there...

It being a Saturday, shops closed at 10pm. And that was when we walked back to our hotel to call it a day (or night!). Not so for my son, since his Singapore friends picked him up at our hotel and took him out and around the city till almost early morning.
