Qualities of a Good Parent

Topic :What are some qualities of a good parent? Use specific details and examples to explain your answers.

It is apparently well-known nowadays that parents play an important part in their children's life. Parents can greatly influence their children, which can be directed either positively or negatively. In other words, the future of the child depends heavily on the hands of his or her parents. Thus, in my opinion, in order to lead their children in the right direction, parents should be strict enough to punish them whenever their children do wrong, and be good-listener.

First of all, parents should be strict with their child in order that the child becomes a good citizen. This is because if parents were too gentle with their child, they would not recognize their mistakes when they make bad choices. When I was in elementary school, I used to beat up two or three kids a week and in middle school, I skipped school and went to arcades frequently. My dad who was once a marine, finally decided to have a conversation with me about what I¡¯ve been doing those days. He asked me what I did wrong, and when I admitted my fault, he hit me as much as I asked for. I couldn't complain at all because I got what I deserved. From that point, I started to make less and less trouble and by the time I was in high school, I became one of the best students of that school. Had it not been for his punishment, I would've been kicked out of school. Therefore, parents should be discipliners.

Moreover, admiration leads to a stronger bond between parents and their children. Generally, majority of parents tend to ignore children's opinions and just to insist their claims. For example, instead of saying ¡°That might be true. But think of this way¡¦¡± or ¡°You¡¯re right.¡±, many parents are apt to say ¡°You¡¯re wrong. Just listen to my word, son¡± or ¡°Shush, don¡¯t even try to get on my nerves.¡± Children are normally afraid of trying new things and suppressing their thoughts will make it even worse. On the contrary, hearing a child¡¯s opinion and respecting them will be a load off a child¡¯s mind and make it easier for them to try new things. The skill of being a good listener would eventually allow children to achieve their goals much easier in the future.

As we can see, the ability to be both strict and respectful with children can be regarded as the integral qualities of a desirable parent. "Spare the rod and spoil the child". Many people might misunderstand the concept of punishment, however, this proverb, which means that children need an appropriate amount of punishment to be aware of their faults and mend their manners, shows that punishment should be viewed as a discipline, not just shouting at a child. Thus, parents should put their utmost effort in trying to lead their children in the right way.
