DVC Technical Info The DVC performs simultanously both the roles of two microphone bodies and a microphone pre-amplifier. It does so with the least amount of bulk. Input interface The DVC interfaces directly with the electronics in or right next to the microphone capsules. The input is transformerless, insensitive to RF and is optimized for utmost linearity and low noise. Preamplifier Within the DVC itself is a microphone pre-amplifier providing switch-able gains from 6 to 40dB (stock). The gain is implemented using a 6 position rotary switch. In addition the unit has a -15dB pad. Bass cut is implemented using a three position 6 dB/octave highpass filter with filter-knees at 0.3, 60 and 120 Hz. The microphone pre-amplifier is implemented using a fair amount of surface mounted parts, runs in pure class-A and has a direct coupled ("DC coupled") output to a pair of RCA output connectors. This yields a very clean overall signal path and an excellent signal to noise ratio. Together with a virtually flat frequency response from 4 Hz to 65 kHz this all add up to an extremely transparent, natural and un-colored sound. Output level/dynamic range The unit can output as much as +14 dBu. The selfnoise is at -116 dBu (referenced the input) resulting in a dynamic range in excess of 120 dB. Power The DVC uses a novel powering scheme and does not contain any DC-DC converters. The output from the unit is therefore absolutely free of high-frequent switching noise that could cause audible artifacts in a downstream A-to-D converter. Portable The portable aspect is not overlooked. The DVC is 5.5 inch long, 3.0 inch wide and 1.25 inch tall. The unit is free of bulky connectors and weights only 0.8 lbs. The unit operates in excess of 100 hours on one set of two standard-sized nine-volt batteries of Li/MnO2 type from UltraLife. NB. No Phantom Power The unit here described does not interface to microphone bodies nor does it provide 48 Volts phantom power. Comment on the DPA-4060/61 These DPA capsules will work with the DVC but a more compact solution is possible when using pre-polarized electret capsules. This also applies to the BlueLine capsules and others. |
