Students will:

  • identify the three main patterns of settlement: linear, scattered, and clustered;
  • identify and describe the characteristics common to places of high population density and the characteristics common to places of low population density;
  • use appropriate vocabulary to describe their inquiries and observations.

Tuesday

Activity 2: Patterns of People (80-100 minutes)

This activity reviews the terms and concepts of population density, introduces the concept of population distribution, and examines factors that affect the distribution of world population.

Students will:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the factors affecting population distribution;
  • locate relevant information from a variety of sources;
  • analyze, synthesize, and evaluate data.

Wednesday

Activity 3: Population characteristics (80-140 minutes)

This activity introduces students to 12 terms used to describe the characteristics of populations.

Students will:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the terms describing population characteristics;
  • use appropriate vocabulary to describe their inquiries and observations
  • locate relevant information from a variety of sources

Thursday

Activity 4: Want to Get a Job? (40-60 minutes)

This activity models drawing a line graph and trend analysis, and provides an opportunity for students to further develop/refine their graphing skills.

Friday

Activity 5: Scattergraph Exercise (80-100 minutes)

Students create a simple scattergraph to see the correlation between two variables.
