In this exclusive interview with jordanknight.com, Jordan talks to us about fatherhood, bein’ footloose like Michael Jackson and his reflections on being in the limelight again. He also gives us the scoop on the sophomore album that he’s currently recording. He even delivers a special message for his fans!
We find our hero in a hotel room somewhere in LA...
JK.com: How did you ring in the New Year?
Jordan: I brought in the New Year just at my house with a few close friends and family; nothing big, just had a nice little intimate party.
JK.com: Tell us what it’s like to be a father!
Jordan: Different, it’s great. It’s really opened my heart up. You know, when you’re in a grumpy mood you just go pick up your child and it just gets you back in a great frame of mind. He’s just learned to stick out his tongue. That’s his newest thing.
JK.com: How does fatherhood affect your career?
Jordan: I don’t think it does, you know. I definitely have to balance fatherhood and family life with career life. It can be a challenge, but it’s something you have to do!
JK.com: When we last spoke to you, you were doing the Boys Of Summer tour. What are your post-tour reflections?
Jordan: I had a great time. It was an odd experience… I was glad to be on the show and to perform in front of that many people over the summer. It definitely brought back a lot of memories from the New Kids On The Block days.
JK.com: How are you coping with your resurgence in popularity with the result of your first solo release?
Jordan: Pretty well. At first I was a bit nervous getting back in the limelight. You know, having all those cameras on me, but I’m enjoying it. I’m having fun with it. It’s good to see a lot of other singers and celebrities…
JK.com: Another great facet of your act is the dancing you do. Can you tell us about how you see your dancing fit in with your music?
Jordan: I think it just adds a new dimension to an entertainer when you get both… when you hear great music and you see a great visual. Dancing has always been something I’ve loved to do since I was young and I’m really glad that I’m able do it now in my career.
JK.com: Tell us about working with Darrin Henson. Do you collaborate together to choreograph the songs?
Jordan: Yeah, me and Darrin really click well. We come from, I think, the same school of dancing. It’s kind’a… it’s almost hip-hop/Michael Jackson-esque, both merged into one… Street dancing and the kind of stuff you would see Michael Jackson do or the kind of stuff you would see in musicals. We love both of those things, so we work so well together. We definitely collaborate on a lot of ideas. When were doin’ a step to the beat, I’ll do the beat that I want the dancing to accent, you know, keep doing it over and over. That gets it in his head so we can incorporate it into the dance.
JK.com: What kind of work out is needed to keep in shape to sing and dance simultaneously?
Jordan: You definitely have to be fit, that’s for sure. I usually exercise a lot and the best thing to do is probably go run or go on the treadmill or jump rope, which is what I’d do over the summer to keep me on my toes.
JK.com: How long is your work out?
Jordan: Sometimes 30 minutes, 45 minutes, sometimes an hour.
JK.com: Do you use breathing techniques to help you?
Jordan: Not really. I use breathing techniques to relax before I go on-stage… take deep breaths and try to calm myself, but not for the dancing.
JK.com: You still get nervous going on stage?
Jordan: Sure… [Laughs] It’s probably like that for every performer.
JK.com: What do you hope to accomplish with your next album?
Jordan: The best thing to do is make music that people want to hear and really like. And that’s what I want to do, and I want to make sure that… ‘course I like music also… I want to make sure that I have a lot of good songs and good beats so I can do a lot of the dancing to the music.
JK.com: Will this album incorporate more hip-hop or pop?
Jordan: I like to mesh both together, not to be totally street or totally pop. I like to go right down the middle between the two.
JK.com: Where are you in the recording of the next album?
Jordan: We’ve just started on 2 songs. We’re right at the very beginning of it. But it’s gonna fly by pretty quickly. I’ve learned so much and now I have people that I know that I can go to, to get it done. It’s gonna be much easier.
JK.com: What did you learn that you bring to the table to this album?
Jordan: I would say, have fun with it, go on your feelings, don’t try to pick apart everything so much and just make sure that when you do something, it feels good. Even though it may seem like a weird or wacky idea… but if you feel something, do it!
JK.com: Who will be producing your next album? Will Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis be producing again?
Jordan: I hope so! They’ll probably do, maybe three or four songs.
JK.com: Do you have any of the songs written yet?
Jordan: I’ve got about 3 or 4… you kind’a just roll with it. Let the music just come to you.
JK.com: Will you be collaborating with Robin Thicke again?
Jordan: Yeah, I will be. I haven’t yet but I will be, definitely in the future.
JK.com: Can you tell us about your creative process in songwriting?
Jordan: Sometimes you get a title first, like a name of a song and then put melody to it. Sometimes you get a melody first, you just hum a melody, something that you like and sounds good along with the chords on the piano then afterwards you put words to it. Sometimes that’s the hardest part. Putting words to a melody. I’d rather put a melody to words. But I’m better, I think, with melody rather than words. [Robin Thicke] is good with both. So it makes my job a whole lot easier.
JK.com: You worked with Mya on her new album, will you have any special guests on this album?
Jordan: I want to but it’s a surprise. I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag. It’s going to be very cool!
JK.com: Can you give us a tentative release date?
Jordan: Late spring, hopefully, but you never know… it won’t be that long; it won’t take that long.
JK.com: Do you check out the site regularly?
Jordan: I visit it every so often. Actually, I just got a laptop computer that I’ll be taking around with me and it’ll be much easier for me to go on the Web site and see what's going on. But every once in a while, I check it out just to see what people posted up or what they talk about in the chat room.
JK.com: What would you like to say to your fans, especially those you’ve come to know in the chat room?
Jordan: Thank you for your support and look out for my new album, it’ll be coming very soon. And keep on chattin’!
