Captive care
Caging: We keep ours in a 20L tank with a screen hood and an aquarium light. The tank is heated by a under the tank heater which is connected to a heatostat which keeps the take at a constant temperature. The tank is filled with a mixture of peat moss and green moss. The snake is provided a large bowl of water and many branches to climb on. Feeding: our snake is feed about every other week. His favorite food is goldfish but I also feed him pinkie mice and large earthworms. Handling: Garter snakes do not like to be touched or picked up. They have a habit when threatened to defecate on you, which is not only gross but has a terrible smell that would repay any predator. Therefore, the snake is best viewed while in its tank. Observations: this snake is very reclusive and spends most of its time hiding out of site. However, ours is very active in the early morning when he can be seen sun bathing under the lights. This is a cool snake to have but it does not like to be touched or looked at so if that is a problem, you might want to look into a different species of snake. |
