As a responsible pet owner we all should  take total precautions in protecting our dogs from all the parasites that can attack our canines at any point in their life cycle  and any place.  I hope that you have investigated all the available products on the market to decide which Heartworm medication best suits your living and environment  situation.  If you feel that you would rather try another prescription medication other than the brand your vet has recommended,  please discuss your feelings with your vet.  After all it is YOUR little darlin... and you do have several choices.  Which one is right for you???
INTERCEPTOR
How does a dog get Heartworms??? Without getting into the technical aspect of the damage etc that these parasites can do.. SIMPLY PUT....  Heartworm is an internal parasite and it actually needs two hosts to complete its cycle.  The mosquito actually serves as a host for the larve of the heartworm.  An  innocent mosquito ingests the larva after biting an infected dog .  Once the hungry mosquito, now a carrier of the heartworm larve,  moves on to its next host and bits your dog, your canine is now infected as well. The larve injected from the mosquito digs into your dog skin  and moves through the bloodstream  until it reaches  the right side of the heart. There the heartworm reproduces and  each worm  can reach up to 12 inches!!!!!!!
Recommended for dogs 6 months of age or older. One injection for heartworm last for 6 months.    If you have trouble giving your oral medications on time, you might want to consider this.  This medication also is a preventative measure against hookworm.

MY PERSONAL OPINION: Though it may be convenient, my geographic location is prime for round, hook and whipworm.  I'd have to constantly monitor these additional parasites with testing, and additional medications if they developed them.  If you can't remember to give a once a month pill, how are you going to remember to monitor the other parasites your dog may and probably will, come in contact with?
This once a month topical medication  is used for preventative use for Heartworms.  It also kills adult fleas as well as prevents their eggs from hatching.  It also claims to control ear mites, ticks and sarcoptic mange.  IT DOES NOT CONTROL other parasites such as roundworm, hookworm and whipworm.  It also doesn't state whether it is waterproof.. If it doesn't say it I don't assume it.. waterproof meds are a big point for my pets.  For dogs over 6 weeks of age.  Claims to be safe for pregnant and nursing dogs.

MY PERSONAL OPINION: I love the idea of not having to give my pet any oral medications, however this product like the injectable does not control the parasites that are in my geographic location.  So my thoughts are the same on this product.  I would have to constantly monitor these additional parasites, with testing, and additional medications if and when they developed them.  Alot of extra worry as far as I'm concerned. and waterproof?? who knows.
REVOLUTION
SENTINEL
PROHEART 6
1 INJECTION LASTS FOR 6 MONTHS
This once a month beef flavored chewable oral medication is used for the prevention of Heartworms.    It also protects against roundworms and hookworms.  For puppies 6 weeks of age and older.  Claims to be safe on pregnant and nursing dogs.

MY PERSONAL OPINION: I like this product better than the two above, but still missing one parasite preventative (whipworms) that another product offers as additional coverage.
HEARTGUARD PLUS
Sentinel is a combination of two products, Interceptor & Program, put into one pill for convenience(not any cheaper than buying the two products separate)  as a once a month  oral treatment. The Interceptor part of this pill prevents heartworm, hookworm, whipworm as well as roundworm. The other part of the pill is Program ( which would have to be your choice of flea control in order for this product to be for you.) sterilizes the fleas thus breaking the flea life cycle.  For dogs and puppies over 4 weeks of age and over 2 lbs.  Claims to be safe for pregnant and nursing dogs.

MY PERSONAL OPINION:   I'm confused about this product, Interceptor by itself can be given to puppies or dogs over 4 weeks of age. Program by itself can be given to a dog or puppy over 6 weeks of age.  So if this is one pill by the same manufacturer with the two pills combined.. how is it safe to give it at 4 weeks when seperately program can't be given until 6 weeks of age?? HMMMM..  Thats puts up a huge flag for me.  Though I love the Interceptor part of this product, Program is NOT MY CHOICE OF FLEA CONTROL.. why???  Because I absolutely hate fleas!!!!  and I hate live fleas even more!!  Even if they are sterilized,  they still continue to bite your dog, or any other blood host, (you, your kids etc)  cause flea allergies PLUS they live for 111 days.!!!  Why would I spend the money on this product and have to buy an additional topical flea medication to eliminate the fleas all together????  You would be surprised just how many people use this and then realize the product doesn't kill the fleas, then have to invest yet another large sum of money in the prescription once a month flea products to get the results they thought they were getting in the first place.
Interceptor is a once a month preventative oral flavored pill that prevents Heartworm, Roundworm, Hookworm and Whipworm.  For puppies over 4 weeks of age and over 2 lbs.  Claims to be safe for pregnant and nursing dogs.

MY PERSONAL OPINION: This product covers the most parasites, so this one is definitely my choice.  I use this and Frontline Plus for my flea/tick protection (which by the way helps protect my animals from tapeworms because my dogs aren't getting bit by the flea. Fleas carry the tapeworm, so if they aren't biting your dog, you're lowering your chances of NOT getting tapeworms. !!!!).  I am very confident  that between the Interceptor and Frontline Plus my parasite problems are well in control..
I personally have my boxers on Interceptor YEAR ROUND..  Though some vets say it is not necessary, since mosquitoes can't live in the winter, there is always a chance that some mosquitoes can survive indoors. I also prefer to have the other parasite protection year round because my canines do come in contact with other dogs during playtime and our walks. I'm confident that being on this product year round, gives my boxers the best and total protection and they deserve it.  Why  take any unnecessary chances???

TRI- HEART PLUS

Tri Heart Plus is the generic version of Heart Guard Plus.  It is a once a month pork flavored chewable tab that prevents heartworm, roundworm and hookworm.  For puppies 6 weeks of age or older.  Claims to be safe on pregnant and nursing dogs.

MY PERSONAL OPINION: Same as Heart Guard Plus
