This is how th save a BMP file to a JPG (or jpeg) to reduce the file size, but not the quality.
You just saved a picture from the scanner, or camera. Now you want to make sure its saved as a JPG because as a BMP, the "file size" is too big to email (on a lot of ISPs'). Open the picture with a program that lets you save it in a different format.
On Windows98 and up, you can use "Paint" found in the "START, Programs, Accesories" . OR you can use the photo editor that came with the scanner. The program I use now is ""Irfanview",. It has a lot more options than Windows paint program.
Follow the steps pictured below to see how to "save as" a photo. I'm using the scanners program below, but its the same with "Paint".

Select Save as then, click the "Save as type" drop-down window, |

. To change the viewing size(actual area) use the "Stretch and Skew" function of the Paint program.
