You have to take your blessings where you can. That's a good thing to tell yourself over and over once the nominations have been announced. As usual, my favorite dramas faired better than the comedies. My personal favorite, 24, picked up 11 nominations including Best Drama and Best Actor for Kiefer Sutherland. Six Feet Under garnered a field-best 16 nominations. As long as the show, Frances Conroy, and Lauren Ambrose get recognized I'm happy. C.S.I.'s nod for Best Drama was somewhat a shock (not as much as Marg Helgenberger's nod for Best Actress), and relief, as it is after all TV's #1 drama. The Sopranos returned after a year hiatus with 13 nominations, including Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Actress. Edie Falco is pretty much a shoo-in. While not getting much respect at all, Without a Trace, Everwood, and Boston Public did get a nod or two.
On the comedy front, only four of the comedies I watch received recognition. Will & Grace leads the pack with 12 nominations, including deserved nods for the fab foursome and Best Comedy. Friends has a chance to repeat its Best Comedy victory last year, as does Jennifer Aniston, who along with Matt LeBlanc will compete in the Best Actress and Best Actor categories, respectively. Malcolm in the Middle claimed only 4 nominations, including acting nods for Jane Kaczmarek, Bryan Cranston, and the hilarious, but mean Cloris Leachman. Scrubs claimed only one, albeit, it is worthy - Best Casting.
Reality TV is making its mark on the Emmys. Survivor, American Idol, and The Amazing Race will compete in the newly created Reality TV Competition category. Both Thailand and Amazon editions of Survivor scored nods. American Idol had a field-best of 5 nominations. |
