John Strang

John Strang was born in Eaglesham, England in 1858. In 1877, at the age of 19, Strang came to St. John’s, Newfoundland where he found work with the firm of James Baird. After serving as a clerk for a few years, where he gained a knowledge of the wine and spirit business, Strang opened up his own business on the corner of Prescott and Water Street. Shortly after he moved to O’Brien Black where he also ran a popular saloon. The Great Fire of 1892 destroyed this business, however, Strang reopened in the Acadia Building on Water Street with a Mr. House. An advertisement for 1894 for Strang and House, mentions that they have a large stock of champagnes as well as cider, brandy and whisky in cases of bottles, flasks and half flasks. By 1898 Strang had moved his business to 327-329 Water Street. Strang continued to operate at this location until January 23, 1909, at which time he became paralyzed and died while curling at the Parade Rink.
