I toured across Canada with John Baldry in the early 80s from Ottawa to Vancouver. He was a special person to work with for me because I had been so influenced by English blues. He was an important figure in the blues scene in England in the early 60s.
John had a wonderful singer named Kathi MacDonald singing with him then as he probably does now. She is a fabulous singer with long and important career behind her. She replaced Janis Joplin in Big Brother and the Holding Co. and went on to be a much respected singer but never received the acclaim she should have.
We were playing an auditorium on Halloween and John dressed up as a pirate and Kathi as Little Bo Peep with a gigantic hoop skirt. There was a power failure in the hall. We were left standing in front of a couple of thousand people with no sound or lights. Just the house lights.
Ill never forget the feeling of standing behind this 7 foot tall pirate and Little Bo for what seemed to be hours. I dont think I have ever felt so uncomfortable in my life. Great for the audience though.
