I played with Hooker years ago at Massey Hall in Toronto. This is one of the most perfect concert halls in North America. Its very old and very prestigious.
I had seen another local band play with him and they seemed to have quite a hard time following him and I didnt really understand why. The afternoon before the gig the leader of the band went to talk to him to see what we should work on or if he had charts or if he wanted to rehearse. Hooker said can you play in E? well yes we can but, then we dont need to rehearse.. Very reasureing.
We did the gig and it was fantastic and true to his word he played the whole set in E and came out and did the encore in A.
Now that John Lee is gone these memories are all the more important.
