Comments: Hi Jon, Great Site, My hubby and I are planning to go to Cuba for 2 weeks - the first in an allinclusive by Santiago de Cuba. The 2nd week, we want to travel around to see the sites. We are willing to travel, but have to come back to Santiago for our flight. Do you think our hiking information is still valid - we would like to get into the countryside, do some hiking, see the flora & fauna, as well as see the cultural sights. Horseback riding would be great as well. Any suggestions are welcome. The loney planet book wa redone this year - maybe it is more accurate? Thanks, Sue |

I have had many good conversations with the people there, that is when the police are not spying on us, and we have to find somewhere els to chat. I would like to visit Denmark also. My grandfather was from Aalborg, and I would like to see if I have any family there. Take care, and thanks again for the web sight. Thomas Damborg |

Comments: I enjoyed your photos and commentary a great deal. So much of it rang familiar. As the daughter of Cuban immigrants, I am interested in learning more about my parents' country. However, I had hoped to find more details about the province of Oriente, and bout Banes in particular. I wish I could ask my father about his birthplace, but sadly, I cannot. Any information you can direct me to about Banes, espcially its topography, would be welcome. I am writing a story and so far, I've only found the barest f facts on Oriente Province. I can trust my memory of my father's stories. Naturally, the facts I've gathered have been political in nature--and have little to do with the geography. I want to be able to describe the landscape as accurately as I can. I'll keep plugging on and it will have to do until I can get to the country itself. Thanks-- Shylda Odell |

I was born in Peru, currently live in the US, and found certain similarities between Cuba and Peru, like for example the lines at the train station. Comments: As a lone female I was initially a little nervous about travelling in Cuba alone. After an hour in Cuba however, I realised just how safe Cuba was: there have been only a handful of occasions when I have felt safer. People generally were caring, welcoming and wise. The country is absolutely beautiful. I was warmly welcomed and had some of the best conversations in years. I was particularly struck by the apparent racial harmony (comparing superficially with my home, central London, and experiences in the K). I noticed some dissenting voices on the guest page, critical of Castro's Cuba. To these people I ask, spend TIME in (don't just walk through) every walk of life in your country, and then in every walk of life in Cuba. Open yourself in every instance and then tell me what you think. I do not believe anyone who has seriously reflected on real experiences from each political system can be SO damning of what Cuban's are trying to achieve. I met a Columbian woman in Havanna who had moved to Cuba because, sh said, she'd rather bring her child up in a country where there was community and care for people, where life was put before money. She wanted her child to have this over a passport or right to vote! That's quite a statement, and she was not alone. On another point entirely! Does anyone know of flights from Miami to Cuba direct? I would appreciate feed-back as I'm desperate to go back and direct fares are pricey. Many thanks. Zoe |

Comments: It is precisely all those Europeans, Canadians and others that responded to your web page that they are looking forward to visit the tyrant's island jail and spend their dollars and other currencies there part of the reason why the tyrant has succeeded in staying afloat for 40 decades. The other part of the reason is the US weak administrations during the same period. I was sent to school in the US in 1959 at age 11 and have no desire to visit that "jail" while the tyrant rules, prevents free speech and do s not respect human rights. I am looking to go when free elections are held and a totally democratic form of goverment is instituted, and then to take back all of the stolen properties "purchased" by the Spaniards during this second colonization and perha s use the lumber from these building and burn some at stake like they did to the indians during their first colonization. |

From there we traveled to Baracoa for 8 days, took a Cubana flight to Havana and went on to Vinales, then back to the Santiago area for two weeks. It was an amazing journey, and we want to go back again. We are US citizens, and traveled there without our government's permission (travel to Cuba by US citizens is forbidden and punishable by severe fines or imprisonment. I don't think they enforce it unless you are flaunting it or perhaps doing some kind of business with Cubans). Thanks for sharing your photos and info abo |

Comments: To the person that wrote about Baracoa. Do you know that Baracoa was the first planned town in the Americas by Europeans. The town is over 500 years old. It was Cuba's firt capital. My mother was born in Baracoa. I spent many vacations there when I was a hild. My grandmother's house was just below El Castillo. My family's name, Hartman, began in Baracoa in 1820. A German named Phillipe Hartman Miller arrived in Baracoa with his wife and two children. I had the best of times in my life there in Baracoa wi h its mountains, rivers, El Malecon and its beaches. |

It's incredibly ironic that a revolution that was supposedly for the poor of Cuba has converted Cuba from a small, prosperous developing nation to an enslaved and imprisonned miserable hell dominated and geared towards foreign tourists with U.S. Dollars. |

Baracoa is very intriguing to me because it is where my mother was born. She always spoke of its unique eden like beauty, the ropical lushness of the place. I loved the picture of the mountain clad in palms and embraced by the clouds. Thank you for a glimpse into this world that is forbidden to me. |

Comments: hello, i'm planning a trip to cuba in july for about 14 days. can you recommend a trip plan that can encompasses cities that reflect the core of cuban living, without having to rent a car? what modes of transportation are available, their efficiency, ac essibility and frequency? are their flights, for instance from pinar del rio to camaguey or trinidad? also i will be travelling alone. i am a 35yr old filipino woman and i do not speak spanish. will i be faced with impediments that would warrant me to consider the typical "herd" group trip instead? i am coming from los angeles. my special interest is cuba's health care delivery system, although i am desirous of experiencing the cultural highlights as well. many thanks for your response. |

Your right if you want to see Cuba now is the time. Ever since Unesco placed the old city of Havana o the list of world heritages, they restore everything rapidly and it changes too. Go see it before it becomes a tourist trap. Don't go to Varadero, that's not the real Cuba you wanna see, check out the small places and if you have a car take hitchhikers i 's fun and enables you to contact lots of local people. If your in Havana check out El Patio (next to the Cathedral)at the end of the day, great embiance and lots of rum and salsa !! Ciao |

DS. |

I admire your sense of adventure in testing the bounds of how far you could push the a thorities in Cuba to see "restricted" areas which most people would probably not dare to do. Comments: Hi Jon: I just took a wonderful vicarious trip to Cuba thanks to your website. As an American I have always been sad that we share so much history with Cuba but I really know so little about it other than what I read years ago about the revolutionaries i the Sierra before the fall of Batista. I have travelled in Africa and Asia, but, sadly, not in Latin America. I am 63 years old, still fairly strong, and would enjoy a non-scheduled trip such as yours, although if it were all by foot, bicycle and horse, that might be preferable to the one-and -only train. Jon: I am wondering if one could engage the services of an expediter of some sort who could teach some Spanish, travel simply and set the officials at ease along the way? Thanks Peter |

Comments: As a cuban I enjoyed your page and was amused by your experiences. Before reaching any conclusion, you should read about pre Castro Cuba (excluding if you may, politics) and you will find out why Cuba was the third in the ranking of standard of living in he americas back in 1958 (U.N. statistics). What hapened in Cuba is mainly the fault of us cubans and some of the US. remember that if it wasnt for the USA you europeans will still be burning jews and emigrating to South America. Do not take it badly, th s is not my intention, but I am a bit tired of reading about the mosnter from the north, the US being the sole responsible for whatever happened in my country. regards Pedro |

Jon, your trip sounded quite wonderful. I'm originally
from Cuba and though I've been gone for over 36 years, someday I hope to be able
to return. Cubans do indeed have much to be proud of, and I'm pleased you
recognized that. I don't consider myself a etrospective Cuban such as those in
Florida who can't get the Cuba of the 50s out of their heads. Thanks also for
all the wonderful pictures! I enjoyed your site very much.

proven to be very strong in conviction. Viva Cuba y Castro!

I visited your web site on Cuba, as you I travelled
independently for a month last October, I really liked the experience and as an
spanish it appeared fairly easy to get in contact with the locals, you find
wonderful people there but there´s also the tricky side, the ripp-offs, lies,
etc, ("la mecanica" - mechanics as they say), quite comprehensible due to the
situation they´re living and quite difficult to explain to other travelers,
specially if not spanish spoken. I will come back, perhaps for for a shorter
visit, Havana, Isla Juventud, Cienfuegos and why not to catch up salsa, rum, etc
:) again.

Jon, I finally got in to see your Website. In some ways
it was like waiting for the train in the Havana train station. I think I'll look
into traveling by bus... I wonder if it will be any easier. I would like to know
where the trail is that you hike in the Sierra Maestra, and more details about
your hiking experience.

I really enjoyed your comments, especially regarding tren
numero uno, which I was told is sometimes called el tren especiale. I had the
"pleasure" of taking the train from Matanzas to Holguin, which was an adventure.
The guards and ploice on the train kept warning about "banditos', so to make
things easier for the pickpockets and robbers, all lights were turned OFf at
10:30 p.m. We finally reached Holguin at 2:15 a.m. - pich black. To make life
more interesting, one had to jump more than a meter from the train step, to the
ground. The food on the train, from the trolley, was actually quite tasty, and
reasonably priced. If you think the train is interesting, try the BUS!! I have
done both, and still enjoy the trips to Cuba, because the people are really
friendly, and hospitable. It is MUCH less expensive than travel in Europe!!
Regards, and feel free to keep in touch. I usually go to Jiguani, Hoguin, Bayamo
and Niguera, since I have business interests and friends there. Bill

Hi, this is Linda from Montreal, Canada. I read your bit
on Cuba; it was very interesting. I plan to go to Cuba at the end of March for
two weeks. I was just curious about where you stayed in Santiago, Havana, etc. I
read you could stay with the locals for 10 US. Thanks for your info. Hope to
hear from you soon. Linda
