Task 1 Someone once said "life is a series of moments." In Denis Johnson's book The Stars at Noon, the female journalist in Nicaragua is surrounded by revolutionaries (The Sandinistas) and the desolation of a third world country. She remembers particular situations and instances among the rubble, confusion and war and admits, towards the end of part I, "and still we had those moments." No one can take away her memories, thougths and recollections. Click on the cover of the book and the picture of the troops and imagine you are in a revolution, whether it is the Cuban one in 1959, Nicaragua in 1984, Bolshevick in 1917, et cetera. Either as a participant, bystander or reporter listen to the speeches. Make a list of "moments" people might be scared of, why they would be scared or why not, and what memories you have or what you think the people in the book have or had of war or revolution. Click on "next" for Task 2 when you're finished. |
