Thesis: “‘Fair is my Love, and cruel as she’s fair;
The Vogue of Elizabethan England: The sonnets of Sidney, Daniel, Spenser,
Drayton, and Shakespeare.”
Thesis Advisor: Dr. Marc
Ricciardi
The history of the
sonnets’ importation and development throughout Renaissance England was indeed
monumental. With the advent of humanism
beginning in 13th century Sicily, Giacomo de Lentino and Francisco
Petrarch composed their sonnets with the purpose of praising a desired woman
and expressing the human spirit. The efforts of the sonnets’ early pioneers in
Western Europe, Wyatt and Surrey, led to its permanent position in English
literature. My study of Sidney’s dramatics, Daniel’s music, the imagery of
Spenser, the attitude of Drayton and Shakespeare’s animated vocabulary explores
how each of their uniquely crafted sequences added to the fervor of the
sonneteering trend of the 1590’s.
