New Dawn came to me from The Roseraie at Bayfields. First, let me say that I had never received a mail order rose in such fantastic condition as this one! The mass of roots must have been two feet long. For the most part, I've been very pleased with this rose's performance. It is wonderfully healthy with bright green, shiny foliage. No diseases, no insect damage here. The blossoms are so soft and silky; they are heart-melting creamy pink. On a warm summer day their fragrance can be detected several feet away. However, I cannot understand the inability of its canes to survive a Michigan winter. It will certainly never cover my rose arbor at this rate! This is the third year canes have died back to 12 inches from the ground. I'm discouraged! I think I may give "Rosarium Uetersen," a very hardy climbing rose from Kordes, a chance in its place. New Dawn is a sport of the climbing rose "Dr. W. Van Fleet." A 1935 sport of New Dawn, "Awakening," is gaining popularity for its fully double flowers with the same fine qualities as its parent. |
