White Bread

This is one of my favorite recipes! It's much easier than it seems, very difficult to do wrong.

ingredients
5 3/4 to 6 1/4 Cups all-purpose Flour
1 package active dry yeast
2 1/4 cups milk
2 Tablespoons Sugar
1 Tablespoon Shortening, Margarine, or Butter
1 teaspoon salt

In large mixing bowl combine 2 1/2 sups of flour, and the yeast. In a saucepan warm milk, sugar, margarine or butter and salt. Add to flour mixture. Beat with mixer on slow for 30 seconds, then on high for 3 minutes. Using a spoon, stir in as much remaining flour as you can.

Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until moderately stiff. About 3 minutes, though in my experience, you cant knead it too long :-) Place in lightly greased bowl, turn over to grease both sides. Cover and let rest in a warm place till double (about 45 minutes).

When double, punch dough down. turn out onto lightly floured surface and divide dough in half. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Lightly grease 2 loaf pans. Shape each half into a loaf by patting or rolling.

Place shaped dough into loaf pans. Cover and let rise in a warm place till nearly double (about 30-40 minutes).

Bake in a 375 degree oven for about 40 minutesor till top is brown. Remove from pans immediately, and cool on wire racks.

Makes 2 loaves.
