| Jesus was rejected by His own countrymen. The Jewish leaders accused Christ of blasphemy, a crime worthy of death; but since the Jews had no power to put a man to death, they brought Him before Pilate. Pilate questioned Jesus and found no falt in Him. He offered to release Christ because it was a holiday; but the mob yelled all the louder for the Saviour's death, and Barabbas, a murderer, was freed in His place. Seeking every path of escape, Pilate ordered Jesus whipped; and a crown of thorns pressed onto His head. For fear of the people and his own political position, Pilate would not do what was right. Christ was rejected by the very people He had come to save. "Behold the man." |
