She rang the doorbell, the same apprehension filling her as it did the first time she had come here. her heart was racing so fast, to the point she was sure a heart attack was imminent. All Brooke could think about was what Kevin had told her, she knew why it has hurt him so much she hadn't remembered, he had poured his heart out to her and she told him she wouldn't forget and she did, she felt horrible. She rang the doorbell again, not sure what she was going to do about David, she couldn't just end their two year relationship and hop into one with Kevin, but was it fair to anyone to lie about her feelings? She didn't know. She rang for a third time, and still no one answered.
"It's
Christmas night, why would he be home anyway?" She asked herself,
looking down to the small wrapped box in her hand. She set it down
at her feet and searched her small bag for a pen and piece of paper,
Kevin,
I saw this and thought of you, I hope you like It. Merry Christmas. I'll remember your promise to me always, no matter what happens. Brooklyn |
She hastily scribbled the note to Kevin tucking it under the package and turning to leave. Brooke walked off the porch, the dark sky filled with a million snowflakes falling down on her as she sauntered to her car, getting in and pulling slowly out of the driveway wishing this time he had opened the door and invited her in. She sighed and started down the tree lined streets, snapping out of her trance only when she heard the soft ring of her cell phone.
"Hello."
"Hey where are you?" A curious David asked.
"Just dropping off that present." She said, sort of telling the truth, just not all of it.
"Oh, well will you be home soon, I want to go out."
"I'll be home in like twenty minutes, but you can go out without me you know."
"Crawford's having this Christmas thing, and I wanted you to come."
"No way, you remember what happened last time?" She snapped, holding the cell phone with one hand and trying to maneuver with the other.
"Come on Brooke. You don't have to drink, you can be DD or something." He pleaded.
"Oh thanks David, maybe you shouldn't drink tonight, we all know how you get." She said referring to the fact David turned into a prick when he drank.
"Hey it wasn't me who drank so much she passed out in the bathroom and made a fool of herself." He shot at her.
"Screw you David, go without me, "
"No you're coming Brooke!" he yelled. "You are my fiancee for god's sake, you should be with me."
"David we'll talk about this when I get home, you know I hate talking on the cell when I drive. Bye." She said hanging up on him and tossing the cell into the passenger seat. I'm his fiancee not his harem girl, and I do not plan on being his slave, ever, she thought. Her foot getting heavier on the accelerator, but she slowed down when she noticed she was beginning to hydroplane. The snow on the road was wet and slippery and Brooke slowed down even more as she rounded a turn, watching as the car coming in the opposing traffic didn't make the turn, sliding into the small gully next to the road. She slowed to a stop, turning on her four way flashers and dashing across the street to see if anyone was hurt. Her breathe caught in her throat as she recognized the cars driver. Kevin stood below her in the ditch, his hands on his hips and a look of bewilderment on his face, obviously wondering how he was going to get out of his predicament.
"Drive much?" She laughed, as kevin looked up to see her standing on the side of the road. "No seriously, are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine, but I think it's time to change my tires, did you see me slide off the road?" Brooke nodded, helping Kevin out of the ditch and handing his her cell.
"Here call a tow truck." He accepted the phone and dialed the number, arguing for fifteen minutes with the man on the other end.
"Well when can you get it out? Monday! I guess so, fine, thank you." He gave an exasperated sigh turing to face Brooke. "Thanks for the phone, but can I bother you for a drive home?"
"Sure."
She smiled, both of them walking silently across the street, both of them
trying to ignore the tension between them. Brooke, desperate to dispel
the awkward silence between them, turned on the radio. The stations
played nothing but Christmas music, and since she wasn't in the most festive
of moods, she grabbed a tape from the pocket if the door and popped it
in.
"Look into my eyes you will see what you mean to me, search your heart, search your soul and when you find me there you'll search no more. Don't tell me it's not worth tryin' for, you can't tell me it's not worth dyin' for, you know it's true, everything I do I do it for you" |
Bryan Adams echoed over the speakers in the car, and after a few lines Brooke quickly ejected the tape, the songs lyrics sending so many thoughts through her own head, she hoped the same thoughts hadn't occurred to Kevin. Silent Night fittingly kept them quiet as they both hummed along, and they remained silent the remainder of the short trip to Kevin's house, Brooke had lost all her nerve and didn't know what to say to him anymore. As they pulled into his driveway she didn't get out or even shut off the car as they reached his house, she simply said good bye as he got out. He seemed frustrated by her, but shut the car door anyway and walked to the porch. Brooke watched as stepped next to the small box, thinking he'd miss it, but as fate would have it, he dropped his keys and her present was in plain view, and he picked it up removing the note from the bottom. She suddenly got very nervous and began slowly backing out of the driveway.
Brooke was barely moving, and watched closely as Kevin, under the glare of her headlights, slowly unfolded the note, reading it quickly and shooting his head up to look at her. He clutched the unopened box in his hand as he darted off the porch in her direction, Brooke stopping as he caught up to her car.
He beckoned her to roll down her window, leaning far inside as she did, shifting her into park and removing her keys from the ignition.
"Kevin. What are you doing?" She asked as he opened the door and pulled her out, rolling up her window and leading her by the hand back to his house.
"Come on." He said, still clutching the box in his hand, along with her keys. The stepped into his house, Brooke standing like a statue in the doorway. "Please sit down." he said, helping her take off her coat and leading her by the small of the back to the living room. After lighting the fire place he sat down next to her, glancing from her to the box that sat in the palm of his hand.
"I don't have anything for you." He said in a serious deep voice, Brooke only smiled and shrugged.
"I don't care, why should you have anything for me?"
"You got something for me!" He said, finally opening the package. Below the wrapping paper was a small black velvet box and Kevin looked up at her with curious eyes. He snapped it open to reveal a beautiful silver pocket watch, she could see the confusion in his eyes, mixed with a memory and she smiled.
"Why does this remind you of me?" He asked. She looked into his green eyes, eyes that seemed almost black in the dark. She noticed how the lights on the christmas tree shone in them and smiled as she began her story.
"I was at the antique shop and I looked into the display and saw this watch and immediately you came to my mind. I remember back at Wyatt when we were sitting around telling random stories about our lives and stuff, you sat there and so intently told the story of how your father had a pocket watch you loved, and that after he died it got lost and you were crushed. I just saw it there, and that whole story came back to me and I had to get it for you, I don't really know why I remembered that." She shrugged, looking up at Kevin, who still stared at the open watch, running his finger along the edge or the glass and silver. He didn't say anything and just stood up, walking slowly across the room, pacing back and forth in front of the roaring fire. Finally Brooke went to him, very confused about the emotions her present had evoked.
"I'm sorry Kevin, I thought you'd like it." She apologized, placing her hand on his arm. He set the watch down on the fire place mantel and turned to her, his eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't mean to upset you," She said, her words getting cut off as Kevin grabbed the sides of her face and pulled her in for the most sensual kiss of her life. He melted every bone in her body as his lips tasted hers slowly and passionately. He broke from their kiss, still grasping the side of her face and whispering to her.
"Never have I been given something that meant so much to me before Brooklyn, I can't believe you remembered that story. It looks so much like my fathers watch." He cried, she could feel his tears dropping on her cheeks, as he kissed her again.
"Thank you so much." He sighed, looking into her eyes, "Do you even know what this means to me?" His chest rose as he inhaled a deep breath pulling her against him and hugging her tightly in thanks. Kevin kissed her again, his emotions pouring into her and every one of hers responding to him. She could still feel the moisture on his cheeks as he explored her face with his lips, her arms wrapped around his waist. His kisses were deep but soft, the tickle of his goatee brushed across her skin as his strong hands cupped the sides of her face.
"We can't do this Kevin." She mumbled as Kevin kissed down the side of her neck.
"I know." He replied breathlessly, kissing her mouth once again. She began to get caught up in him again when she finally pushed away. They still held each other at arms reach staring at each other, trying to catch their breath. Brooke backed away from him, walking to the kitchen as she reasoned with herself.
"I'd be cheating on David. He's still my fiancee, and I don't want to cheat on him." She stated as she hopped up on the counter top. "God this hurts."
"What?" Kevin asked, stepping closer to her.
"Nothing."
"No, you said it hurts. What hurts?" Kevin asked as he stepped in front of her, their faces level and close. She looked up from the floor, locking his eyes with hers.
"It hurts not being able to be with you." he nodded in agreement, gently placing a comforting hand on her knee. Just his touch ignited a flame in her and they both felt the spark. He leaned in to kiss her again, her legs at his side and her arms wrapping around his shoulders pulling him close to her. Suddenly Brooke felt herself being lifted from the counter and didn't even notice where they were going, she just pressed her knees against his hips to hold on as he carried her like she were as light as a feather.
Kevin knelt down on the couch, Brooke landing on her back and looking up at him, seeing her desire reflected in his eyes. She thought he was going to say something, but no words came out of his mouth, instead he just stared down at her. She could see the love in his eyes and in the semi smile his serious face was looking at her with, a small line forming next to his lips. Brooke ran her hand along his neck, watching his adam's apple rise and fall as he swallowed. Coming back down to her and kissing her with yearning passion, lighting every part of her on fire. Her back was pressed into the soft couch and Brooke tugged at Kevin's sweater filled with nothing but longing as he sat up and pulled it from his body, returning his mouth to hers.
The room was basked in
the soft glow of the Christmas lights and the flickering of the fire danced
on the walls. They could barely breathe as they kissed, breathing
becoming unimportant to either of them, her hands roaming his bare back,
and his running through her hair. He moved from her mouth,
allowing her a chance to catch her breath as he trailed wet kisses down
her neck following the neckline of her shirt from shoulder to shoulder.
His hand had moved to her waist and rose slowly up her body bringing the
shirt with it, finally she sat up, allowing it to be brought over her head,
and tossed to the floor below. Kevin moved slowly down her body trailing
an imaginary line down her stomach with his lips, stopping at the top of
her jeans. He popped open the top button, feeling Brooke
shudder in surprise as he kissed the skin he had revealed. He then
kissed his way back to her mouth as Brooke started sitting up, never
breaking their kiss as her hands ran down his chest, making their way to
the top of his dark blue Levi's. She stopped kissing
him and looked into his eyes as she undid the button and lowered the zipper,
his eyes never breaking from hers, her arms encircling his waist,
their bodies pressed tight against one another. Kevin slowly stood
up from the couch bringing Brooke with him, his hands resting on the small
of her back. He let his jeans fall to the floor, kicking them off
his feet as he stood before her in his boxers, Brooke gasping as he yanked
the button fly of her pants open forcefully but gently, pulling them from
her hips. After standing together for a few moments they finally
attacked each other with furor, falling down onto the couch, Brooke straddled
across his legs, not one ounce of skin he had was left untouched by her
lips as she pushed him into his back, Kevin letting out a soft moan.
The intensity between them was unlike anything she had ever felt before,
his hot breath on her skin, and every touch he put on her sending electricity
shooting through every part of her body. She rose slightly with every
breath he took, their lips hungrily tasting each other, both of them laughing
as they accidentally rolled from the couch and landed with a thud on the
carpet below. He kissed her through his smiles as he reached
onto the couch, pulling down the blanket that covered it, as she succumbed
to him, and to every emotion she felt for him. All her inhibitions
and doubts vanishing.
Kevin leaned on one arm and stared down into her blue eyes,
"You remembered."
"I remembered what?" Brooke asked, her face still flush with heat as he ran the back of his hand down her cheek.
"My promise to you." He smiled, kissing her bare shoulder. "I meant it Brooklyn, it wasn't just the beer talking that night, it was my heart."
"I know."
Kevin kissed her shoulder again, moving to the nape of her neck, causing Brooke to giggle softly.
"Now I have more to dream about."
"But this isn't a dream." She said, pulling his head by the chin to face hers. He leaned in closer to her, kissing her gently on the tip of her nose and pulling the blanket tighter around them, as he enveloped her with is strong arms, holding her close to his body never wanting to let her go, and hoping he would never have to.
"No,
it's better." He sighed, as they cuddled close together and fell
asleep in front of the glowing embers of the nearly extinguished fire.
