Is Man Mortal or Immortal?
--the doctrine of the 'immortality of the soul' cross-examined
- What is Man? Genesis 2:7
- Was Adam created mortal or immortal? 1 Timothy 6:16
- If Adam had not sinned, would he have ever died? Genesis 2:17; 3:2, 3.
- If he had lived forever, would you call that immortality?
- On account of sin he did die, and doesn't that prove that he wasn't immortal?
- Is there a difference between eternal life and immotality?
- Can a person live eternally and not be immortal? Rev. 21:4.
- If Adam could not go to heaven without dying and could not die without sinning, does that prove that sin and death are a blessing to the human family? Romans 6:23
- Did Adam lose an earthly or heavenly home? Genesis 3:17-19
- If Jesus came to restore what was lost by Adam's fall, what will be restored, paradise or something else?
- Was Adam a single indivdual or two individuals in one? Gen. 2:18.
- If composed of two parts, soul and body, which one was Adam?
- Which was the responsible part that could think, feel, decide, and act?
- Which part was it that sinned, soul or body?
- If it was the soul, why did the body have to suffer?
- If it was the body, why is it said that 'souls have to be saved' (since they did nothing wrong)?
- In Gen. 2:17, it says, "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Which part of Adam did God talk to?
- What does the word 'thou' refer to in Gen. 3:17? "And unto Adam he said, 'because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee saying 'thou shalt not eat of it', cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.'"
- If you say it refers to the soul, then what does the same word 'thou' refer to in Gen. 3:19? "In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat break till thou return unto the ground: for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou are and unto dust shalt thou return."
- How many different penalties were passed on Adam for his sin?
- Was was pronounced against the sould and a different one against the body?
