Tent Pitching
Introduction

Tents comes in various sizes, namely the 4/ 6/ 8 / 10/ 12-men tents. Tents can come in different shapes and can be made of different materials, with nylons and canvas being the more common ones. In the following, the NPCC 4-men competition tent will be discussed as it is most commonly used in the unit and the campsite in Pulau Ubin. Besides, tent pitching is also a component in the camp-craft competition organized by NPCC HQ once every two years.

Camping is one of the regular activities of the NPCC. Campers stay in tents at Annual Camps and Adventure Training Camps at the NPCC campsite in Pulau Ubin. Hence, it is necessary for instructors and cadets to familiarize themselves with tent - pitching. Besides, tent - pitching is also important in Campcraft Competitions that is held by the NPCC HQ once every 2 years.


Aims and objectives

To strengthened the knowledge of trainees in terms of tent pitching which they have learnt as cadets.
To provide a recommendation of the standard tent-pitching methods used in the context of NPCC.

1) Choosing a campsite

1.1 The ideal site is one on elevated land or gentle slope so as to prevent flooding

1.2 Search for campsite, which has a rich source of dry wood, firewood and water.

1.3 Clear the place of any rocks and wood before pitching the tent.

1.4 Keep away form high trees as dead branches may fall and hurt someone or damage the equipment.

1.5 Check the direction of the prevailing wind and pitch the tent alongside it to maximize ventilation and minimize air resistance acting on the tent.

1.6 Avoid dead logs and undergrowth, which may be the habitats of harmful insects like army
ants, bees, hornets, wasps and snakes.
