Please Respect Her and Give Back To Her
For thousands of years before there were any male gods,
there was The Goddess, and Her worship continued
unabated clear up until its violent surpression
by Iron Age patrism. When and where worship of
the Mother prevailed women and nature were held in esteem.
The Goddess is first of all earth, the dark,
nuturing mother who brings forth all life.
She is the power of fertility and generation;
the womb, and also the receptive tomb,
the power of death.
All proceeds from Her; all returns to Her.
As earth, She is also plant life; trees,
the herbs and grains that sustain life.
She is the body, and the body is sacred.
Respect the earth and you respect Her.
Respect yourself and you respect Her.
Mother Who Art in Earth
Our Mother who Art in earth,
Hallowed be thy heart.
Thy healing come,
Wholeness be done,
In us, as it is beyond.
Today we give our daily joy,
And forgive ourselves as we accept you.
We kneel to thee, earth Mother,
To thy higher self, my other
For ours is the freedom,
And the wonder,
And the love.
Now, now, now
Largely suppressed during the Christian period,
she emerges again in the 18th century when
frequent references are made
to the female Earth as Mother Goddess.
Interest in the Earth Mother and the Great Mother
increased significantly in the 19th century.
Besides the classical sources attesting to her worship,
the 19th century became aware of the many contemporary
tribal peoples who worshipped the Earth as a female deity.
The Earth Mother in ancient and modern nonliterate religions,
is an eternally fruitful source of everything.
Unlike the variety of female fertility deities
called Mother Goddesses, the Earth Mother
is not a specific source of vitality who must
periodically undergo sexual intercourse.
She is simply the Mother; there is nothing separate from her.
All things come from her, return to her, and are her.
The Earth Mother transcends all specificity and sexuality.
She simply produces everything, inexhaustibly, from herself.
She may manifest herself in any form.
In other mythological systems she becomes a more limited figure.
She becomes the feminine Earth, consort of the masculine sky;
she is fertilized by the sky in the beginning and
brings forth terrestrial creation.
She has become even more limited in those
agricultural traditions in which she is
simply the Earth and its fertility.
