He married ISABELLA GILLESPIE Abt. 1780, daughter of ROBERT GILLESPIE. She was born Abt. 1762, and died September 19, 1833 in Smyth County, Virginia.

Notes for ROBERT GILLESPIE:
Robert Gillespie wife name is uncertain. Book " Annals of Tazewell County, Virginia", says she was a Miss Bates, but book " Southwest Virginia Families" by Trimble says she was a Miss Hayter.

4. REESE A.4 GILLESPIE (ROBERT3, JAMES2, WILLIAM1) [footnote 4] was born Abt. 1828 in Smyth County, Virginia, and died in Southern Missouri. He married SALLY HANSHEW [footnote 5] November 29, 1848 in Wythe County, Virginia, daughter of Jacob HANSHEW and Mary Cameron. She was born Abt. 1829, and died in Southern Missouri.
Notes for REESE A. GILLESPIE:
The 1850 Census of Smyth Count, Virginia, shows Reese as age 22 with wife, Sarah, age 21, and son Andrew age 1. At that date (1850) he was living in household of his uncle, Thomas R. Gillespie, who lived in same area as Reese's father.
Their marriage bond is dated November 13, 1848 and signed by Peter Hanshew, surety. Bond states she was daughter of Peter. They were married by S. Rhudy, Minister in the Evangelical Luthern Church.
Reese Gillespie and family left Smyth County, Virginia, before 1860 and went to live in southern Missouri, (county unkown) and Reese and Sarah died there in an epidemic (date unkown). After their death, the four sons went back to Virginia where they must have lived with relatives. The four sons were born in Smyth County, Virginia.

Note: In 2001 Barbara Hanshew Schutz sent me information showing Peter Hanshew was the brother of Sally and Jacob Hanshew was her father. I believe this lineage to be correct. Refer to endnotes of Sally Hanshew for source of this information. (Robert H. Bowles)

5. WILLIAM R.5 GILLESPIE (REESE A.4, ROBERT3, JAMES2, WILLIAM1) [footnote 6] was born January 04, 1851, and died June 02, 1888 in Schuyler County, Illinois. He married MARGARET ANN CUSTER November 25, 1874 in Smyth County, Virginia, daughter of HENRY CUSTER and ELEANOR DICKEY. She was born March 31, 1848 in Botetourt County, Virginia, and died April 13, 1892 in Schuyler County, Illinois.
William and Margaret are Resting at the Pulaski Cemetary South of Augusta, Illinois.
This is the house that William built near the Holston River in Smyth County Virginia, a short distance from the Custer Mill. Maude was born in it. The picture was taken by Elva M. G. Bowles and scanned by Robert H. Bowles.
Notes for WILLIAM R. GILLESPIE:
They moved to Schuyler County, Illinois in abt 1883 near Huntsville. They returned to Virginia once but came back to Huntsville to live.
Their first four children were born in Smyth County, Virginia (address Olympia); the last two were born near Huntsville, Illinois.
William and Margaret are both buried at Pulaski Cemetery south east of Augusta, Illinois.

HENRY SMITH6 GILLESPIE (WILLIAM R.5, REESE A.4, ROBERT3, JAMES2, WILLIAM1) [footnote 7] was born November 02, 1877 in Smyth County, Virginia, and died September 12, 1965 in Golden, Adams County, Illinois. He married JOHANNAH CHARLOTTE SCHWANKE December 25, 1901 in LaPrairie, Adams County, Illinois, daughter of AUGUST SCHWANKE and ELTJE EGGEN. She was born October 22, 1879 in LaPrairie, Adams County, Illinois, and died October 03, 1947 in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois.
Notes for HENRY SMITH GILLESPIE:
Henry and Hannah Gillespie first lived in tenant house on King farm just south of Huntsville, Schuyler County, Illinois where he worked for Mr. King. A few months later they moved to a house in LaPrairie, Adams County, Illinois, where son Carl was born in 1902. Then they rented a farm one mile east of LaPrairie owned by J.T. Ross; her daughter, Elva, was born in 1905, and they lived there until spring of 1919, with the exception of one year (1908?) when they lived on a farm near Ponca City, Oklahoma; then returning to same farm at LaPrairie. In 1919 they bought a farm in Fabius Township, Marion County, Missouri. Children attended Palmyra High School and lived on farm with their parents until they married. While living here Henry was President of the Fabius Community Organization at the time the Community House was built in 1922. After Elva married in 1929 they moved to Palmyra and Henry sold State Farm Insurance and Pfister Hybrid Seed Corn. He was always interested in purebred livestock and modern methods of farming. In the spring of 1933 they moved to a farm in Hancock County, Illinois, between Bowen and Augusta. Living here until 1939 when Henry and son-in-law Wilfred L. Bowles bought an adjoining 160 acre farm from Wayne Stienbargrer. There were two houses on the farm and they lived in the smaller house until time of their death. They are both buried in Woodlawn Cemetery just south of Augusta, Illinois.
This picture is of the buildings on the Illinois farm bought by H.S. Gillespie and Wilfred L. Bowles. The Gillespie home is to the left and the Bowles home is to the right. The barn replaced two that were destroyed by tornadoes after the purchase. The Gillespie house collapsed in the 90's and was replaced by farm land. The photograph was taken by Ronald Bowles.

H.S. Gillespie used these pencils for advertising while he was a Pfister Hybrid Corn salesman.
The puzzle in this advertisement is who the "sons" were. Henry had only one son, Carl. The "sons" may have also included his son-in-law, Wilfred L. Bowles. The ad was scanned by Robert H. Bowles.
