Singapore 2001

On a lark and after an an off-the-cuff invitation, I decided to go to Singapore. It was my first taste of Asia and of all kinds of different foods, including stingray and deep-fried baby squid and Fish head curry. My thanks to Eugenia and her friends, Jason, Norris, Wei Wei, Edelyn and Alan for making my trip amazing. I'll always remember K.L.

The first thing that strikes you is the humidity. Well that and the 15 hour time difference from Vancouver. And then everything is so green!! The differences go on and on. The housing, the hawker markets with all the food, the temples. But it is probably the easiest city in Asia for Gui-lo's since Singapore was a British colony until a few decades ago, and they have kept English as the primary official language.

The Merlion is the protector and symbol of Singapore. Here you see the original Merlion protecting the harbour and the seeing the financial district in the background.

This is me in the National Orchid Garden in the Botanical Garden of Singapore.

This is one of the many chinese temples in Singapore. It is amazing how beautifully decorated they are. You know, thinking about it, they are just as ostentatious in their own way as the cathedrals of Europe are.

This is the beach at Bintan. It was so clean, and the sand so soft and nothing, not even seaweed was on the beach. And there are no other resorts sharing the beach. While there are lots of people around, you feel as if you are almost alone by walking down the beach a ways.

Sun rise at Bintan Lagoon Resort was beautiful, all orange sky. I was amazed I woke up in time to see it.
